What is this?

Can someone tell me what is this fitting noted in this picture? Looks like something should be connected to it but can't see anything that should be. Some kind of sensor or something?

That is the high pressure fuel rail, what you've circled is a schrader valve to hook up a fuel pressure gauge for diagnosing engine problems.

There is a cap available to go on it and keep foreign materials out, and keep it from rusting/corroding. Its not needed but for sure a good idea.
