Lake Powell trip report

Got back from 4 day Powell trip at Bullfrog Marina. Stayed at the lodge and day tripped to spots. Overall it was a great first trip. Amazed at the size of the lake, the canyons etc. Weather was perfect, no wind and water was warm. Things I noted, probably obvious to veterans of Powell.

-Every day was a full day. Just getting around takes waaay more time than any lake we had been to before (mostly small mountain reservoirs).

-More water skiers than wakeboarders and more surfers than both.

-Best wakeboarding water was closest to the Marina in back of BF Bay. Probably because it was early and we were only boat except another malibu that was barefooting, which looked impressive. We tried going 25 miles north to Good Hope Bay and it was okay but midmorning with other boats etc. The canyons seemed hit and miss based on even just one other boat going thru at same time

-Saw a guy jump a 60+ft cliff. Crazy.

-Big boats in small canyons suck.

-The mussels inspection is a half measure. I can't imagine the time and effort to truly enforce at all launches.

-Parking was a pain. Even at 7am just finding a spot was difficult. Of course this would be solved with slip or boat camping

For sure we will go again next fall as it is great place to extend our season within a reasonable drive. Next visit we are thinking about boat/shore camping, but getting good water is a key objective. Thinking somewhere by Dangling Rope Marina to be close to gas. Any recommendations for wakeboarding areas in that area?

Amazing place for sure.

We love Powell & go there several times per year.

I don't see how you couldn't like it :innocent:

Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

It will definatley suck if those muscles get introduced to the lake.

Did you make it into Halls bay, or go up Mokie Canyon?

Hit both of those areas. Wakeboarding was good in Halls Bay early morning also. Favorite canyon of the 9 or so we went to was crystal springs canyon for the sheer size of the canyon walls.

Glad to hear you had a good trip. We have never made it past Dangling Rope, one of these trip we want to travel from the damn to Bullfrog. We missed our trip last weekend due to me getting the stomach flu.

What about a WOW event at Lake Powell next year?

Probably won't happen most just don't want to travel that far for one and secondly the cost is an issue for many at this point in time.

Powell's so awesome. Gold standard for fun- glad you had a good time. Your points were spot-on. Others I would add:

1. If you're going to put in at Bullfrog and really want to get away from everyone else, Escalante Canyon is your choice. Far away, not easy to get to, but the best scenery and early-morning glass on the lake. Moki Canyon's cool (closer to Bullfrog), but we've always camped WAY back in Davis Gulch on the Escalante Arm, and it can't be beat. If you do go to Escalante, head down Davis Gulch, park the boat all the way at the end of the canyon, and start walking. There's a pretty cool waterfall/rock formation not too far back...depending on the lake level.

2. If you're going to head all the way to Dangling Rope from Bullfrog/Escalante/Wherever, you might as well swing a few miles downriver and check out Rainbow Bridge. So cool.

3. If you're putting in from Page, I would recommend Last Chance Bay- best opportunity to find some glass on that side of the lake. For a great hike on this side of the lake, I would go with Lower Antelope Canyon. While it's not a famous as its Upper Antelope brother, if you park at the end of the canyon and start hiking, after about a mile the slot canyoneering becomes fantastic.

I would add many good camping sites if you are beach camping.

Houseboating is the best way to enjoy lake powell. Did it again this summer and it was awesome. I have heard that bull frog is less desireable given the narrower canyons and lack of beaches. I prefer the Wahweap end of the lake and then heading towards Dangling Rope, especially liked last chance bay.

We prefer Wahweap as well. The funny thing is over at Warm Springs (across from the Marina) you can get some great water. I think its overlooked by many. Everyone feels they need to travel way out to get good water.

We have done HB trips there and also just stayed at Wahweap lodge. The lodge can be much more relaxing, since you just show up.....

Lake Powell is the BOMB! We go every fall usually end of Sep for a week on a House boat. Out of Wahweap. With the water levels where they are currently, the south end of the lake is much better. We stay in one of the canyons off of Padre bay and have good water 90% of the time. Not even a half hour out of the marina in the Bu. A Utah WOW would be awesome down there.

We have been talking about a trip to Powell, Would love to attend one if someone is putting a trip together for next year. It would be great to be there with someone who could show us the cool must see sites.
