After reading through several posts...im pretty certain its the packing gland thats not sealed correctly as there is no drip rate but a conatant stteam of water coming into the hull.

But any tips or pointers in making this a simple and painless process of tightening it? Thanks

It is simple and painless. It's one nut. Depending on your hours you may just want to change the packing while you're at it.

Spoken from a direct drive guy  Edit - or from a vdrive guy with his engine out right now  It's really not that easy on our vdrives. You need (2) 1 7/8" wrenches, break the skinny nut (jam nut) loose and try to tighten the big nut down, then re-tighten the skinny jam nut. I cut a double open ended 1 7/8" wrench to make 2 wrenches with about a 4" handle on each. You may need to move/disconnect some hoses and/or ballast pumps... it's really tight under there. But if it's been over 300 hrs since it's been touched you might as well replace the packing.

Ndawg...yeah its a tight squeeze for sure and couldnt figure out how to remove the rear ballast inlet pumps and fitting that has the valve on it to get my wrenches seated properly on the nuts. Any tips for removal of those? Factory pirahna pumps i believe with the brass fitting into the hull. Thanks

You should have the same setup as me, I can get the nuts broke loose without removing any ballast gear. Make sure your 1 7/8" wrench handles are not longer than the width of your hand. Actually, loosening, you only need to get a good bite on 1 of the nuts to break it loose, try the skinny nut first. The skinny nut (jam nut) should spin easily once they are broken free from each other.

Once you get them broke free and replace the packing, if that's the route you take, tightening is trial by error. I think of it as tightening an oil filter, hand tighten then maybe a 1/4 turn, then tighten up the jam (skinny) nut.

No matter what you do, when you put it all back together you will need to get wrenches simultaneously on both nuts to tighten it all up.

ok thanks...will give it another try this weekend. Im going to track down different wrench...bc the ones we had were those plumbing wrenches with the butterfly screw to adjust. They were too long and didnt cut them down. Just trying to find these locally vs ordering online and waiting on them. I will be replacing the packing at the same time
