wasn't the impeller - still overheating

Recommended Posts

Hey there. Thanks for the advice on replacing the impeller. Although on the 96 Scorpian Merc engine on my Response, it wasn't quite as easy as advertised. But then, it was the first time I'd done it. Also, I bought the wrong impeller. On my boat it's "keyed" and not "splined." Should Flight Craft have known? If anyone for Flight Craft is monitoring this, I'll be there tomorrow... The impeller needed replacing as it was toast. And I tried to find all the pieces both before and after the impeller. So, here's what it's doing. At idle it runs great at about 120 degrees. Take it up to 25 mph and it still spikes immediately to over 200. What could it be?

- blockage somewhere that I didn't find?

- thermostat?

- water pump?

I've given up and brought it to my local mechanic (Lake Balch in Wakefield, NH/W. Newfield, ME but any help on diagnosis is greatly appreciated.

I have personally experienced the baffles in the exhaust hose collapsing and causing your symptoms. It was on my old Supra back in 1997, but finally diagnosed by me standing on the dock and watching someone take off at full throttle...basically no water coming out of that exhaust hose out the back. Be sure to check that out.

Did you clean out the tranny cooler? Could be bits and pieces of impeller partially clogging to tranny cooler. Enough water might be getting through to keep you cool at idle, but not enough to cool the motor under way. The exhaust tubing is another good suggestion.
