Replacing paddlewheel on speed sensor

Recommended Posts

Speedometer only showing about 1/2 actual speed on 2009 247. Pulled it out of the water, and one of the "paddles" on the paddlewheel speed sensor is broken off. Doesn't look like it would be too hard to get out of there and replace, but wondering if I should do it myself, as I am not sure how it comes out of there. Let me know if you have suggestions. Thanks.

It's not complicated at all. Just use the pin in the kit to knock out the other pin. Replace the wheel and put the pin back in. Should take about 5 min.

I determined my paddlewheel for the speedometer got smashed on my 2019 Axis A22 and bought the Airmar replacement part with a 3’ wire. Installation looks easy as long as I align the key hole facing forward. Where is the access panel on the boat and will I find the plug on the end of the wire in the same compartment?

Most of the time you can see them from the engine compartment.

Sometimes a heat gun can be used to help bend the little black plastic tabs on either side of the paddle wheel back into place.  The paddle wheel harness plug sometimes gets pushed onto the hollow stringer access holes, but can be pulled back out to get to it.

I figured it out - the paddlewheel speedometer sensor is an easy part to replace once you get to it. There’s a panel underneath the sliding bench seat that just lifts with a little force. The sensor can then be reached and replaced. I plugged in the new one to the harness and spun with my fingers with the key turned on to verify the speed sensor worked first.

Good recommendation on trying a heat gun to bend the plastic first (csleaver) - that may have worked but I already had the $160 part and didn’t want to risk the axel being bent.
