Steering cable broke?

Recommended Posts

While out on the water today I made a hard left turn and came off the throttle. After sitting and going for a swim we started out again and the boat would not turn to the left, could make a tight turn but would not come back to the left. I got it back to the ramp by straightening the rudder by hand and doing about 5. While on the trailer can move the wheel to the right rudder follows. While moving to the left no dice. If i move the rudder by hand to the left (port side) the wheel will follow. After that I can move the rudder by hand and wheel is not following. It the cable was broke wouldn't it push not pull? For my rudder to go to the right (starboard) the arm that connects to the top of the rudder must pull and I can watch this happen. When the cable is pushing (left or port turn) no dice. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a problem up at the helm. Get under the dash and look at where the steering wheel meets the steering box. Anything look bent, out of shape?

Gotta agree with Pete. You have something going on under the dash. Another possibility would be something slid down your bilge back to the rudder shaft and is causing a block. But it you can move it by hand so that pretty much eliminates something blocking the rudder path.

Fixed it was the cable jam nut on the front on the threaded part of the cable assembly, down by the exhaust manifold. Loose caused the cable to pull not push. Thanks all
