Well I met the shipper in the local mall parking lot last night and took delivery of my new Malibu!

I couldn't help but laugh when I read this. All I can picture is the scene from "Back to the future".

I can see it now: MA and an unknown truck driver meet in the mall parking lot, late. It's dark and the ground is wet from a recent rain. MA glances around, looks over his shoulder, and then very uneasily hands over a large envelope. The trucker hands MA a set of keys and begins to walk away. The sounds of tires squealing can be heard in the distance. MA turns toward the noise. His eyes grow large with panic. Approaching quickly in a white VW bus is a gang of hostile, rock launcher wielding Lebanese men bent on destroying MA's new Sunsetter. MA hops in the Delorian, quickly hooks up the new sunsetter, peals out and then lays a hot patch of rubber and fire at 88mph. Destination: 1955 ..................

Oh yeah, Congrats on the new boat!

Yeah yeah....rub it in. LOL.gif The Monster Tower is the only thing about the boat I'm not super happy with. Losing the Titan really sucks. The Monster is a bit of a pain to fold and I know once the Wetsounds and 4 board racks are on it it will NOT be a one man operation. I'm just hoping it is decently solid. Rugger was pretty happy with it so I'm hopeful it will be good. I'm not going to drill any holes in the boat for tower speakers just yet. I'm going to run ghetto wiring up the outside of the tower until it proves itself. If I end up throwing a Titan up there later I would love to find a TIII. Rockon.gif

HEhe, right on. Just be diligent about tightening things down regularly & I hear they do a good job.

Congrats on the new boat. It really looks great. Lookin forward to seeing the pics you get while you have them both.

martin,

i can't believe Rugger sold his after all that work?!

Rugger had one of the nicest (photo-documented) restoration projects I have seen for the older sunsetters.

what did he buy to replace?

that wedge on the older sunsetter is a real head turner -holy crap!

those two older boats look great next to each other.

espn is saying favre is coming back....gotta run!

CR

I can't beleive it either. That rugger guy must be nuts.

Thanks for the kind words. Haven't found anything yet. Looking for a v drive, bigger hull for my big family. Not that the Sunsetter wasn't cutting it. Great boat as you know from having one. Not sure yet if I'm going to buy a project boat or a big payment boat. Whatever catches my eye I guess. My kids demand another red boat... wait, did you say Favre? I gotta go.

I'm so glad you can retain your spot as president of the square windshield club!

Agreed. I said I'm starting the square windshield club and nominating him president a while back in a thread, after his over-the-top responses to someone's DIY questions. That nomination was supported real quick. Who better to take over a restored Sunsetter and make it even better? Can't wait to see what MA comes up with to take it to another level with future mods. Maybe something to do with the throttle? ballast? I'm already jealous of his new sound system.

Gosh, I just realized... am I out of the club now? :(

MA -- the two look very cool together. Thanks for sharing. My favorite pic of that Sunsetter was always the angle from the rear corner, where the redesigned vinly on the engine hatch (from 2008) lines up with the gel design from 1987. I smiled when I saw that you took a pic from that same angle (even if unintentional). I wish just for a moment we could have the old classic sunsetter sticker for the side by side pic, but it still looks neat to me.

You're right, I'm surprised at the difference in hull size. Might take a hair more weight than what you're used to for surfing. Please do continue to post pics of your projects. Look forward to seeing them.

Thanks guys for all the awesome comments!

Not to worry rugger - I will certainly post lots of pics of the future projects. No doubt about that! Looking forward to playing with the surf wave later this week and this weekend.

The pic was certainly on purpose. My favorite pic of my Skier was on Lake Raystown. I took it floating on a lifejacket and set the boat at that angle. It's aways been my favorite! Rockon.gif

No worries, after all the work you've put into this square windshield, your a member of the club for life! Rockon.gif

not trying to threadjack here, marcher! can't wait to see the photos of both boats on the water! i love Nikons! i, too am amazed at the difference in the hull size between those two boats.

Rugger,

i thought I put a bunch of work in my '89 in the three summer I had it, then I looked at your restoration job and I started to shake my head in amazement!!!

It was tougher on my wife and kids to see it go down the road, but they are itching for another.

we looked at a brand spanking new 2011 VTX last weekend and I started to laugh when the dealer told me the price (knowing I could have 8 sunsetters for that price).

i've got my sites set on a 2001 Sunsetter VLX...titan tower, diamond hull, plenty-o-room, wakeboardable, good surf, etc. etc. etc.

gonna try to nab one for 20K or so.

we moved down to phoenix for a medical fellowship and then we are moving back to MN/ND next summer. planning to buy another Bu in fall of 2011....maybe I'll find one this winter, we'll see!

yes, that '89 sunsetter was a sweet boat. bought it for 7700, sold it for 8500....put 300 hours on it and stuck about 2K in restoration. would I do it again? that is the question. and my answer would be a resounding "HELL YA!"

take care and I can't wait to see your next boat!

That's gotta be the coolest V-Drive that Malibu makes IMO just because it seems to do everything pretty well. That was my suggestion to rugger for his next ride! Rockon.gif

Absolutely beautiful! Sunsetter FTW!

...is that a SR20DET powered car sitting in the drive? Looks like a G20/Sentra. Ridiculous turbo cars are my first love. SR20DET FTW

 I noticed and was curious about the car as well.

The classic boats are very cool and iam a fan of the red and white scheme  very nice boats

Sorry. I missed that question about the car. That was my daily driver in college and I am working at getting it ready to sell. Hard to believe, but it's a 1995 ford Escort LX. I built it in college after someone told me my 88hp Escort couldn't ever be fast. Here's some info on it....

http://www.themalibucrew.com/forums/index.php?/topic/28004-cheap-component-speaker/page__p__402432__fromsearch__1entry402432

Looks like the college finally took my car page off their server. Cry.gif

It has a Focus 2.0L motor swap and a full custom turbo set-up with Greddy fuel management/boost control and a DSM T25 turbo. The intercooler you see their is the real deal Spearco bar and plate intercooler. Not cheap, but boy does it work well. There are almost no performance parts made for that car so I had to do a lot of custom work. Just for starters, the turbo manifold and all the intercooler piping. It's a super fun car to drive and I always got looks as I pulled away form the light and the Greddy Type S blow off valve goes Psssttt as I pull away from the guy beside me. Rockon.gif

Congrats on the new boat..Rugger did one hell of a job on that 89! I was also a member of the square windshield club and owned a 89 Sunsetter. My boat wasnt to the quality of ruggers but I was pretty happy with it. There is something to be said about the old Maiibus ...simple and no electronics. I has less issues with my 89 than I am having with my 09! Here are some picks of the old girl

. Love to see some pictures of the wake with the Wedge down!!

I'll certainly post up some wake pics. We've been busy working on the boat until 2 am the last three nights. The LED lighting is almost completed. The boat lighting is done as of 10 minutes ago. We're working on something special for the trailer right now. I'll post pics of both once we finish it tomorrow.

I looked over your custom pics a lot when i did my ballast for the Skier. I also remember emailing you about it quite a bit.

One thing I wanted to ask you was where you put your amp? Looks like the observers compartment? I have three amps I'm going to be putting in and am looking hard at different places to put them. I think my only choice for the sub is under the driver's foot well unless I work at taking the side wall off the observers compartment.

I hear ya. That's why mine is going up for sale. The biggest reason is I just don't drive it anymore and would rather see someone else enjoy it instead of it just sitting.

Amp is in observers compartment. I had 2 subs - one in the drivers kick pannel and the second firing down the side mounted in the observers compartment. Looking forward to seeing the picks !

Cool thanks! There is a giant Kicker 600.4 amp in the observers compartment now feeding the four 6X9's in the boat. They sound pretty decent for in boat speakers. I have two more amps to add, but am going to be challenged in fitting them all in with the size of the Kicker. The JL 1000/1 is going to have to go up top, with the 300/4 below. I think the Kicker will be replaced with another 300/4 to save space. Hopefully I can get them all on the back wall of the observers compartment, but I'm thinking I'm dreaming. The Skier's tower speaker amp ended up under the observers seat and worked out really well. Might have to utilize that space as well. I think my sub box will end up under the drivers footwell. I just don't want to take that observers compartment apart.

I ended up having a massive 5 channel Directed Audio amp powering 4 tower speakers, 4 interior speakers and 2 subs. The amp was definately loaded down but for a boat sound quality isn't as noticable (some may not agree with this statement). You may want to think about getting one big amp or 2 max due to the size constraints.

It is actually quite easy to get into the observers compartment. You just have to remove a few screws from the seat base and you have full access.
