1990 malibu skier running t higher rpms

Recommended Posts

hey guys i have a 90 Malibu skier with a mercruiser 5.7

i just gave it a major tune-up,plugs,wire ,new points, coil, distributor cap and i bought a new carb

now it seems like my boat is running at a higher rpm ,,

it use to run around 2.8k rpm at 20mph,now its running 3.8k at 20mph

i am also using my spare prop....which made my rpm go up around 200 in the past

maybe after changing all the stuff i did...is their a way to fine tune everything.

any ideas or suggestions would help

ty..... hypo

when you unhooked the throttle cable, did you put it back in the exact same place? the throttle cable might be moving and slipping in the bracket that holds it in place. possibly need to adjust the idle, air, and fuel screws on the carb. another thing to check is the timing.

You did put the key in the drive-shaft when you put the spare prop on right? Whistling.gif

That could certainly cause some unwanted higher RPMs. LOL.gif

Other than that, I can't think of anything else other than the throttle cable suggestion by sgt. Good luck and let us know what you find.

What is the prop pitch and diameter? at 3800 rpm you should be at about 34- 36 mph unless you are way under propped or have alot of algae/ scum or added weight. Howz the tranny fluid level? Does it feel like it slips on acceleration, can you pull up a slalom skier?
