Motor box insulation

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 2004 RLXi with the LS1 (only 50 hrs!!). I absolutely LOVE the boats performance and throaty exhaust rumble. However, it doesn't have the motor box insulation and the interior noise is intolerable. Can anyone provide some comprehensive information on addressing this issue?

Is going through Malibu the best option?

What other aftermarket options are there?

What is the cost?

What are the installation issues?

Many thanks to anyone who can be of help.

Thanks,

John

Is going through Malibu the best option? If you were ordering a boat, I would say yes, without a doubt. Since you already have it, see the link that Ndawg gave you.

What other aftermarket options are there? See the link that Ndawg gave you.

What is the cost? It should be right around $100.

What are the installation issues? Not sure what you mean, it was relatively straightforward.

Many thanks to anyone who can be of help.

Thanks,

John

See answers in red above.

Most of the noise does come from the exhaust, but there is a fair amount that comes from the engine itself. I'm always surprised when I ride in a boat that doesn't have it at how much noisier it is up in the observer's seat. Combine this mod with a pair of STE exhaust tips & you've got a substantial reduction in noise IMO.

I did the motor box insulation myself a couple of years ago. I used spray adheasive from Lowe's and insulation from Lowe's as well. it is the same stuff as from the kit just less expensive. I also use the good duct tape (peel and stick stuff) that is aluminum backed to seal eadges and around the carpeted area on the inside of the box. It has worked well and I have had no issues with it falling off or peeling off.

Precut and pre fit the pieces and dont worry too much about overlap, use plenty of adhiesive and work slow, it really is an easy mod to do your self.

REW,

What type of insulation did you get at Lowes? Was it foil backed fibreglass or foam?

Looks like double foil backed bubble wrap, it is sold in rolls 24" and 48" widths, I think one 48" roll was more than enough, it looks like the same stuff in the kit. Two cans of spray adhesive.

Would you mind snapping a pic of the finished product?

It will be a few days, I am in Canada right now and have some more flying to do before I get home.

Yeah,

For some reason, I can only read the top half of the outer packaging. I don't know what the bottom half says. Maybe I won the lottery or something?
