Diesel?

Recommended Posts

Hey Crew, Every once and a while when I shut the boat off to pick up a fallen rider the engine will "Diesel" a little before if finially dies... In my experience this typically is a symptom of bad gas but I know I am running fresh gas, could this be a side affect of Ethanol? I have recently done: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter / water seperator and a complete fuel system clean. I'm also running the STABIL Marine fuel treatment to combat the Ethanol.

Any ideas?

:thankyou:

Seriously though...

Check the timing, this is usually cause by a hot cylinder due to timing being too far advanced. Also when was the last time you had the carb tuned?

What temp is the engine running at?

What octane are you running?

Ethanol should not cause the dieseling, esp since you are using a stabilizer and it seems you are running it regularly.

My Engine usually runs about 160. I run 87 Octane in it. Should I be running 89, or 93???

I just rebuilt the carb.

Thanks

dieseling can also be caused by something as simple as a hot piece of carbon either on the piston head or somewhere else in the combustion chamber. Do you know what drag racers do to "clean" the insides of their motors?

No, never let the smoke out of your boat motor. Same with wires, leave the smoke in there.

With hot motor and tranny out of gear, rev. the motor up to about 1K and spray a light mist of water into the carb. The cold water will shock the carbon and blow it out of there.
