Malibu Stern Light: How Does It Plug In?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

This weekend in the dark I tried to plug my stern light in and manhandled it a little too much, forcing it and pushing it around. Well, it never went in and I think I screwed it all up and bent stuff. Can you do me a huge favor and tell me what the connection looks like. Does the light have two female holes and one male peg? And then the boat has two male pegs and one female hole? Is that how it fits together? Mine's all bent up so it's hard to tell.

And just in case it's a gonner, does anybody have a recommendation on where to buy a new one?

Thanks!

Just messed with my buddy's this weekend on his '05 vlx. There's a screw head on the bottom of the light pole the goes in a channel on the boat's hole. The boat has 2 male connectors and the pole has 2 female.

Great, thanks. But then what's the male peg sticking at the end of the pole that I bent up? I poled it out with needle nose thinking maybe it was a peg from the boat that got lodged in there, but it's connected to a wire that travels up the pole so it's suppose to be in there. And it looks like there's a female in the boat. But you're saying that if I just put the two male pegs on the light to the two female holes on the boat that it should light up? That's bad news for me because I tried that last night and no light.

Maybe I've got the fittings reversed but it seems like it makes more sense to have the female on the light pole. All I do know for sure is that the screw head on the pole fits down in the channel so that everything lines up properly. Did you check the bulb? Did you have the right switch on? It does sound like you jacked something up

Pretty ez to replace the base or the whole thing.

Parts available lots of places - I bought one at a gas station here in town.

Wally world has both.

Should be 2 prong base (with male connection)

Pole should have 3 openings of which two are used (female connection).

I always thought that 6' tall stern light was a joke. I haven't used it at all since I made the tower light.

Does this meet USCG requirements, or do you still need a stern light?

Meets USCG requirements.

Those damn stern poles always have issues. My old boat had issues with making a good connection - had to have it in just right. Our Malibu's didn't work until I cleaned the connections, but even then is a PITA. I just installed an LED tower light a couple months ago - flip the switch and you are done. The 1.5 hours of install time (had to fish wire through the tower and a couple other challenges) was well worth it for not dealing with that stupid light pole ever again.
