Help with Water Circuilation Pump

Hey crew,

Looking for a little insight. My 2000 Malibu water circulation pump looks to be leaking. I noticed it while doing some cleaning. I took it out and took a look at it. My question is the two little holes located close to the middle of the pump, is there supposed to be a rubber grommet or even some silicon in there to seal it up?? They seem to have nothing in there and one of them (bottom) is leaking causing water to drip and kind of bothers me. I am wondering if I can seal it up or is that bad?? Thanks for any help!!

Those are weep holes. There shouldn't be any type of plug in them. They are there to tell you when the shaft seal is starting to leak, which it is now. Time to replace it. I have the same year boat and had to replace mine at about the 5 yr. mark. Make sure you put in a marine grade pump not, the off-the-shelf Chevy 350 pump from your local auto parts store.

That was my guess that they were something important...guess I will order a new one...is there a difference between the marine and auto? Or just the $$...

No worries.

You do know what b.o.a.t. stands for, right?

I think "marine grade" is a rip-off most times but, not this time. (and, is usually the case when it comes to engine parts)

Marine components use materials that are rust resistant like stainless steel v mild steel to prolong the life or keep the component from rusting out. In addition, there is also the requirement for running in salt water, so more rust prevention is required. Two elements drive the price, the cost of stainless components compared to standard steel and the small volumes. If your boat is equipped with a closed cooling system, a standard pump would work, but if not, a marine version.

before you order the pump. you need to know if you have a plastic timing chain cover or metal one. they make 2 diferent pumps for each application.
