Why does my toeside suck?

As one goofy-footer to another...I thought that was heel-side.

Anywho...I suck on that side too. Damn near knocked out all my teeth and got a concussion on that side this summer. It has to do with the fact that it is a somewhat blind landing. It is unnatural. You have to lean forward for the landing, and like a backside rail slide, it is very unnatural feeling compared to any frontside trick. Coming from the other side, you can spot your launch and landing the whole way (think backside air on vert ramp)...that is a great confidence booster. Going blindside takes a leap of faith, so to speak.

Study the differences from all the "failed" attempts to the one at 1:43. 1:43 was a wider cut out, smoother pull into the wake, much more aggressive (bent knees), stayed on edge into the take-off, didn't let the tail swing out in the air, and looking out to the far shore line. It was actually textbook. Others were short, choppy cut into the wake and looking at the water (far wake).

Maybe try letting go with your left hand after take-off and possibly a mute grab to stay centered and keep your back knee tucked.

I would say based on that one jump that you do have it, you just need to commit to it every time.

p.s. I'm no pro, but those that can't do teach, right?

Yeah I'm about one for ten at this point. It's when I start to think about it that I crash....

Hey,

So on your toeside cuts, you should be cutting into the wake exactly how you cut out from in when you are going to do your heel side jumps. If you look in the video when you cut out for a heelside jump, your rope position is good (back arm is across your body like a seatbelt and you front arm is relaxed. Try to keep the rope close to your hip). When you cut out from the wake to do a toeside jump, you want to give yourself some room to build a progressive edge so cut out a bit further because right now you are just charging the wake which makes it tough to control once you do get in the air because the tension of the rope will throw you off. If you cut further out and pause. Then slowly build your edge increasing your angle as you get closer to the wake, you will have a constant tension in the line and you will still be able to generate enough speed to cross both wakes. As for the jump itself, you want to make sure you are jumping off your toes as apposed to your heels. When you jump of your heels, it will feel like you are falling backwards and you are going to land on your heel edge, you should be landing on your toe edge. Try a few one wake jumps, keeping the handle on your front hip and your shoulders facing across the wake. (If you feel like you are getting pulled over by the rope you can push the rope lower while you are in the air with your front hand, or you can let go with your back hand) then progress to the 2 wake jumps. Remember to pop of the wake, rather than just ride off. Bend your knees and stand tall off your toes.

Hope this helps a little

This is what worked for me, also remember to commit to the jump; Don't bail on it. (that was my biggest problem). I also let go with my back hand on very toe side jump, it will help you stay in the twisted toe side position and keep your weight over your toes. and yea I am Goofy too.

Thanks guys! Tried a little tug on the rope in the air today and that seemed to really help. Hit 5 in a row. Funny how it's simple once you get it but so hard to convey the 19 different things that all need to happen in half a second. making a turn on an alpine snowboard is much the same (with the accompanying level of scary commitment, though toeside is infinitely easier than heelside).

Look across the wake where you want land. Don't stare at the wake. Spot where you want to land. Keep the handle on your leading hip. Edge all the way up the wake stand tall and look where you want to land. Keep your board pointing the same angle on your landing as when you left the wake. Most people on take off turn the board towards the boat instead of keeping it pointed in the direction their going.

The first thing I see is you need more speed. Cut out farther to the side and then try coming in faster. Don't wuss out. You gotta forget about falling, keep your eyes on where you want to go, and commit to the jump. When I first started doing toeside jumps my reflexes kept wanting to do a 180 and land on my heelside. You really have to concentrate on keeping the same position all the way across and then continue to cut out when you land instead of instantly turning towards the boat. It's really a head game more than anything. Keep the handle close, almost behind your front hip and lean away from the boat. You almost need to be cutting at the wake like it's not even there. Just hold your position all the way through and you'll end up on the other side. Good luck!!!

this is what works for me,

handle real close, good hard edge, straighten legs when you hit the wake and give it a bit of a pull when you leave the wake.

i landed a ts 5 today, so stoked

  • 3 weeks later...

UPDATE:

The good: I tried doing 180 w2w yesterday instead of landing toeside and that was sooooo much easier. Landed 5 of 7 and the two I bailed on were very mellow crashes.

The bad: I really beat myself up attempting the toeside w2w jumps a couple of weeks ago and now I'm pretty convinced I have a concussion. The days after I posted the vid above I ate it about a dozen times and a couple of those were headringers. Took it easy last week, but decided to try again yesterday with the w2w 180s. Woke up this morning (after taking a couple of minor bails yesterday, but nothing special) and was a little dizzy. Not good. Grrrrrrr.
