I had a 3 day lesson in surf and ballast this weekend. We are dailing in my buddy's 02 VLX and I am learning the wave. He has surfed for years and I have been riding with a rope on his old board all summer. I never could get the sweet spot. So he was been working on the ballast and I picked up a new board. This is what we came up with.

2002 VLX

10-ish mph

Full MLS, empty non-surf side.

500lbs fat sac surf

250lbs fat sac bow

we have no wedge on the boat

this is where it gets ghetto...

about 250lbs in fuel cans filled with water and bags of sand...surf side.

Here of some videos of me on day 1 on my new Coex. By day 3 I was working frontside really stong, ropeless. Backside was pretty straight, ropeless, but not my side.

Oh, we have been using and old 2005-ish HL model skate that is real light. We ride with the surf rope and work that transition really strong. Tons of fun for an old skater like myself. Thank god I have always kept a skateboard around and never lost my board feet.

Anyways...prepare to be bored...

Note the curl at the end of the first video.

I can't hit play on the vids? I've seen this on a lot of threads recently. Anyone else been having trouble with embedded media?

In Google Chrome it shows the still of the video, but won't respond to clicks on play.

In Internet Explorer 8 it just shows the red x like a missing url to a pic.

Firefox they work fine. Wonder what gives? I use Chrome as my default brower so I'm bummed. Cry.gif

BTW - looks like fun. I like the way you guys really tweaked the wave - even with gas cans. Rockon.gif

can your buddy be talked into a wedge? I don't know what the physics of it are, but with the wedge down the wave doesn't really look much different but has a ton more push. Which would give you a lot more room to mess up. I recently jumped in behind our boat when we had it weighted right and had several heavy people sitting surfside (also goofy) and the wave looked awesome but had no push. Made my board feel super slow. Gave up quickly because we were heading in but it didn't strike me till later that I'd forgotten to deploy the wedge.

The coex is not the fastest or most responsive either.... not that you asked.

Where's the vid of day 3?

Definately addicting and alot of fun,Unfortunately everybody is doing it at all times of the day in the flat parts of the lake.

Alright iam over it. :) Congrats on going ropeless, definately something to be excited about.

Cool, it's very addicting for sure.

Martin,

I just checked & those videos are playing fine in IE8 for me even viewing the site as a guest. Have you checked your flash player? Maybe need an update?

Good call WakeGirl! I just got a new Dell Precision laptop (loving the Intel i7) and didn't install the flash player for IE as I never use it. That fixed IE.

I guess the Chrome issue is something I'll have to look into as adobe's site states it's all up to date.

Thanks!

Wedge is not in the cards for his boat. Just aint gonna happen.

No,the Coex is not the fastest. That is what I like about it. The Broadcast was too fast down the wake and put me in the back of the boat too much. You and I have had similar conversations in the past. I like boards that feel like skateboards. I did not dig the Broadcast I rode at all. I damn near passed up the boat. Besides, I like to cut, not roll. I really am enjoying the Coex. I didnt have the scratch for Phase 5 or anything like that. I know there are better boards than the Coex, but I dont think it is as bad as what people have said around here. Old skaters are used to working any board. I know you know that.

I gotta get vid of us on this old-a** skate we are working. It rips hard.

I own a 2006 Response with power wedge. I can producte the exact same wake with full wedge+2, 400lbs of bodies surf side and a cooler full of beers. Easy stuff and easy to switch sides...for a goofy-footer like myself. I could probably add a sack under the rear seat and one in the front locker, but I think this shallow-hulled bastard would sink.

Day 3? It was on a monday and my wife (camera girl) was at work. Every time the driver tried to film me, he would drop throttle and I would loose wake, so I told him to stop filming and give me a freaking wake. I will have good vids next week. We have a 5 days clear to get it on this week.

We are very cognicant of water and the other boarders around us. We put surf to dam/shore. I totally feel you bro.

Nice work. You can tell that you catch the wave no problem.....when it appears. :) The first vid the wave looks decent. A good part of the second vid the wave is a big whitewashy mess. I wish I had experience with that hull to help you out. In general, and you probably know this but.....

-If your wave is too small you need more weight.

-If your wave lacks power (or speed or 'spin') you probably need more of a list/lean to the boat.

-If your wave is crumbly you need to move the weight around. Usually in the back half of the boat but aybe less (or even more) on non surf side. Speed could be an issue too. Usually you need a higher speed if it's too crumbly.

-If your wave is too short (really small sweet spot) you need more weight in the bow.

Good luck. Post more vids as you go.

edit; the 02 VLX wouldn't be the same hull as the 07 Vride would it?

Ya, the second video starts in wash because we were turning slowly. You can actually hear me tell my wife "don't film this". Then, right after the turn, I hit our double-up wake. After that, pretty smooth sailing. We just need a longer wave.

I believe 2002 was the 1st year of the new Wakesetter hull. Well, the old WS hull now, but new till 2008 (I think). I am not a hull expert, so I am not sure about a 2007 Ride. I have been told the Ride has the 2001 and under Wakesetter hull, but I could be wrong.

Same hull, actually all the way up to '04.

No, that hull should be the same as the vride through 2008. New wakesetter hull was 2005-08, with brand new in 09, if memory serves.

See if you can ride the same setup with a wedge. the wave looks about the same, but has way more push at the back, which effectively makes it seem longer.

I was lucky enough to surf ropeless last weekend, second time surfing and first time behind my 01 VLX (just using stock ballast and a few extra bodies.) The bladder in the locker may be slightly bigger than the origional tank?

Now it's time to sack up and move the sweet spot back a bit.

Surfing is a blast

Ok, so it sounds like its the same hull as my 07 Vride, so here's how we set up that boat to get a great wave.

All MLS full (250 ea side, 500 midship)

NO wedge (it just made it sloppy)

400 sack in surf side rear locker

250 sack under observer seat (or under drivers feet for dark side)

250 sack on floor of surf side

400 sack in bow surf side

10.8 mph

You can pull that 250 sack from the floor if you have a few people on board.

The wave was nice and clean. Really long. Tons of spin to the wave. It felt really fast. Perfect skate/skim style wave. If it lacked anything it was height and mass. It's definitely not the big surf style wave you are going to see with a LSV, but that's ok. I actually prefer the smaller, firmer, faster wave anyway.

Let me know if this works for you.

Come ride with us on Lewisville any weekend and you can check out all sorts of boards.

We load 2 23LSV's - one regular and one goofy and terrorize Cottonwood cove.

We have a couple of Walker F-18s

a couple of Drew Daniello phase 5's

some Inland Surfers Loogey and Black Pearl.

And someone shows up with new stuff all the time.
