V Drive Light

Speed Racer 27

Recommended Posts

This is the first time I am posting and I am new to Malibu, towboats and the Malibu Crew. Let me tell you first, that this site is AWESOME and I have learned a whole lot since I found it a few weeks ago.

I have a 2004 Sunscape 21 LSV which I purchase used from the local dealer at the end of May. We have been EXTREMELY happy with the boat. I have a quick question for you experts and experienced owners. Yesterday I noticed the V Drive light was on when we were stopped at idle (the one below the throttle). I honestly didn't look to see if it was on while we were underway as we were towing and the lake was busy.

Here is what the manual had to say:

The V-Drive Warning Light is located in front of the

throttle on V-Drive model boats and is a warning

device used to safeguard against low V-Drive fluids,

which could result in overheating the unit and eventual

failure.

If the light is on above 1200 RPM, the oil pressure is

low. Check V-Drive oil. (Check while cool.) If the

problem persists, see your local Malibu dealer.

I called the dealer and his recommendation was that as long as you have the oil full in it, don't worry about the light. I indicated that in fact they have removed these lights from the newer models because they were causing too much confusion. I did check the fluid level and it is full on the dip stick.

I have had a good relationship with the dealer but thought it might be best to confirm his recommendation. We are heading up to Northern Wisconsin is a couple weeks and don't want any surprises while we are up there. (by the way I have assembled a list of items to bring along from various posts, very helpful!)

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Normal for those lights to be on at idle. Like the manual says if it is on above 1200 RPM, check the level. If it is still on at that RPM, it might be the sensor system.

I have a 2000vlx and sometimes the light does not com on at all when at an idle.

The boat was serviced earlier in the season and I believe I have enough fluid.

could it be a sensor issue?
