Motor box insluation for V-drives

Recommended Posts

My two storage trunks beside the motor get pretty hot during daily use. I'm the exception to the rule because I actually store stuff in my storage trunks not, put fat sacks in there. Specifically, I have a large cooler in each trunk. I'm trying to save money on buying ice constantly and was in Home D last night and bought this for $17...

It's self-adheasive insulation. It's relatively thin. I traced out the inner parts of all 4 pieces of my motor box plastic walls and installed this to them....

Job was real simple and only took 1.5 beers to complete. The insulation is 15 sq. feet and I measured that I had about 13 sq. feet to cover so, with the extra, I did a double layer on the small "wing panels"...

Those will be my "test panels" to see if the second layer of insulation will stay on the first layer. Also, I'm curious to see if I get any noticeable drop in temp. in the storage trunks. If I do, I will double the insulation on the main panels.

After 2 full days on the water; my hand thermometer said the trunk temps. were cooler than before.

I don't think I'm gonna retire on the money saved from buying ice but, for the $17 and 1.5 beers, it was well worth it.

What were the before and after numbers? Did the engine noise drop?

Engine noise was the same.

Unfortunately, I didn't have my hand calibrated for the first temp. reading. I'm just saying that after the insulation install, the trunks did seem a little cooler than before. If all you have in your trunks is 750s then, it won't matter.

I just don't want that water in the fat sac getting to hot.

The "wing" panels are the small ones behind the large engine side panels and right up against the inside of the transom.
