Bolts came off coupler between prop shaft and transmission

Recommended Posts

I lifted the seat and plastic bin up and found a big bolt laying in the bottom of the boat. What the hell??? Looked around and found 2 bolts missing and the remaining 2 totally loose. Has anyone else had this happen??? I never knew to check it but I certainly will now

Me too. I was just down there adjusting the shaft packing and noticed one of the nuts was almost off. I rotated the shaft around and found another one equally as loose and the remaining two were hand tight. I lock-tighted them on and going to check them at least once a year!

YES, I (unfortunately) have. You are lucky to have noticed it. I didn't notice it until I actually threw the shaft in my 07 Vride. Trust me, you do not want to hear what that sounds like. Luckily, this happened to me after about 30 hours and it was 100% warranty. Luckily too, I killed the throttle the nanosecond I heard the noise and it didn't do any other damage to the boat. Still had to be towed in on a beautiful day and was without the boat for a couple weeks. That sucked.

Soooo glad to hear that you caught it before it got that far. Nice work!

We hear of this on the crew every once in a while. a.k.a. stings about one guy a season.

So where should I check? Which bolts? Could somebody post a pic?

Thanks.

It's the 4" round about 1/2" to 1" think metal ring device that your prop shaft fits into and then 10123-2-th.jpgthe coupler bolts to the back of your transmission. It's basically the connection between the rear of your tranny and the prop shaft.

Thanks. I'll check. Good to know.

I was told by Steve at AZinboards to replace my bolts and nuts with Nylon locknuts like the ones on yours. Did yours come new like that or did you replace them with locking nuts???

Those are from the factory.

edit,

I'm a huge nylok and loctite fan. Every bolt on my motorcycle is loctited. I had a huge bolt come off my bike at Leguna Seca last year, I'd hate to be the guy behind me when that thing hit the ground and probably bounced.

I used a white out pen & made a scribe mark from the nut to the flange, & from the bolt head to the coupler. Now at a glance you can see if anything has loosened.
