Why exactly is spray sunscreen bad?

Sorry for a new topic which may have been covered countless times but i didn't see the reason after looking for several minutes.

We got used to using the spray sunscreen, great for kids, and sure enough everyone uses it once they are on the boat instead of at home before we all load up.

I actually don't likethe spray stuff, kills my eyes, and I put on sunscreen at home but nobody else does.

So I'm wondering what damage is being done when everyone is using the spray stuff?

I've learned my lesson with the spray tans women put on. It stained my vinyl pretty good but its coming off over time.

Certain sunscreens will stain the vinyl. I can't remember which brand is notorious for it at the moment.

My thinking with spray sunscreen is that its definetly gonna get on other stuff than it's intended target due to it being a pressurized atomization of the stuff. People are certainly gonna put it on out on the water and it is certainly gonna get carried by the breeze. Just too risky to have that stuff getting on your vinyl and sitting there.

One of my friends had his wife spray him with Coppertone sunscreen while he was standing on my dock, which has a vinyl surface. About a week later, I noticed I could see his footprints, where they were oulined by the overspray. 6 months later, I can still see them.

From my understanding it's the propellant in the spray not the oil that causes the damage to vinyl. I don't allow the stuff so not sure if that's it or not. I know what it does when you get it on your sunglasses though so I sure don't want it on the vinyl.

We use it & don't have a problem.

I'm not crazy with what it does to the glass, or my glasses. But it seems to wipe off pretty easily. I just try & spray it downwind.

Mrs 06' had a friend on the boat the other day. I looked up one time and saw this brown streak on the vinyl I yelled WTF is that? Her friend was so embarrased, it was her spray tan rubbing off. Didn't leave a mark or stain but boy was she embarrased. We'll see if she comes back, maybe if she did more often she wouldn't need the spray tan.

HEhe, so did she have the inverse of the stripe on her body? I don't blame you a bit for freakin out a bit.

The Vride interior is predominantly white. I have more problems with the little yellow seeds the poplar tree on our beach drops than anything else. The little yellow spots drive me up the wall. But they seem to fade or clean up after a while.

Even our dogs don't do anything to the interior. We keep their claws trimmed & wipe it down as soon as they get out.

The last good cleaning I gave it was a couple weeks ago with Malco's upholstery cleaner. It really made the boat look great. A buddy just gave me some of that Exquisite that I'll check out next. I've also used Babe's & had really good results. But none of them are very easy for me to get a hold of locally.

We have been using the Coppertone Sports 30 spray. It says clear. But if you spray it on and then wipe off with a towel you will see a yellowish stain. The overspray has caused some staining on the vinyl at the time, but wipes off with soap and water. I have a couple of t-shirts I have had to throw out because I sprayed my face neck etc while wearing it ended up with staining around the collar.

There we have it folks. I'm convinced it's not worth having spray on sun block on the boat now for sure.

My next boat will have all black interior to avoid any staining.....j/k

I've actually spotted an all black boat (black gel coat and black interior) and it looked pretty cool from a distance. Once I saw the whole inside was black I thought that was the dumbest idea anyone has ever had. When its 115 degrees out in AZ you don't want black anything.

The people in the boat were black and they were sure getting a lot of attention because it was something people don't see out there. (black boats, not black people).

anyway, back to the sunscreen issue. I guess I will get the oil free stuff and try to get people to put it on before hand.

Honestly I didn't give 2 chits if she ended up looking like a zebra when it was all done I was just glad it didn't stain the vinyl. Correction it left a streak but wiped right off.

We use spray sunscreen on the boat sometimes, but only on the platform, and only with the boat turned so the breeze is taking the overspray away from the boat. We're very careful with it, and normal rub on lotion for that matter. I always tell everyone to make sure it's fully rubbed in, and to be careful not to get it on the seats. I never have any problems.

and only at 1:27 pm on tuesdays, and only if the water is calm, and only if the person is over 12 years old  . Sure sounds like alot of variables you don't have all that much control over to me.

HEhe, Charlie likes think he's got that kind of control. But I'm pretty sure Claire puts him in place occasionally.

Hope your enjoyin the new boat Charlie. Wish I made it out to Jason's this year...... to spray sunscreen all over & drive ya nuts.

Actually I figured I'd spend more time on the Slip n Bleed anyway!

I personally think the spray on sunscreen is a waste of money. Most of it goes into the air and not on the person. And even what goes on the person still needs rubbed in a little.

We hardly don't use it but I didn't realize that so many products had a effect on the interior that way, good to know all this now.

It's not all that hard .... When someone wants to put on spray sunscreen tell them to go to the platform, and turn the bow into the wind... That way, none of the overspray hits the boat (hopefully).

Someone used Neutrogena 100 spf sunscreen spray-on on my boat this past weekend. It was the stuff that you can "see" on your body before you rub it in, and it stained the everliving hell out of my vinyl. Orange-colored stains.

Probably looking at replacement of the cushions, but anybody have any ideas about getting rid of the stain?
