Front ballast fill and drain pumps blowing fuses

Recommended Posts

2008 VLX. Last fall I was able to fill and drain the two rear ballasts and the front ballast. This spring I had two amps and a subwoofer installed, which may or may not mean anything. I can still fill and drain my two rear ballasts but I noticed my front ballast pumps were not doing anything. I checked the 5 amp fusues under the dash and they were both blown. I replaced the fuses and tried the pumps while on the trailer and both fuses blew right away. I assume I have a short somewhere?

Maybe your pumps cracked over the winter, if they had water in them and froze? I don't know how cold it gets down there, but you can manually remove the cartridge from the pump by unscrewing the blue top on the pump. Turn the impeller by hand to make sure it is loose, and turn it on, if the pump just blows the fuse, and doesn't turn on at all, then try replacing the blue cartridge portion of the pump, isn't this under warranty?

Agreed take out the pump and try to turn it by hand and turn it on while you have the pump out and see if it will turn over. Winter does alot of tricky things to your boat. Some people put antifreeze in there pump over winter.

One of my rear pump was blowing fuses and it ended up being a jammed impeller. Pop out the cartridge, spin by hand to make sure it's loose, and then see if it turns on.
