Ballast Pump Removal Help

I am trying to replace one of the rear ballast pumps on my 2002 vlx but it seems to be stuck pretty good. I can turn the pump with a pipe wrench but it turns the brass valve at the bottom with it instead of just the pump. I stopped when I saw this because I was worried that I may be stripping out the thru-hull fitting but didn't know. Can someone tell me if it it safe to unscrew the whole unit and then get the pump separated from the thru hull valve after it's out of the bilge and I have some room to work? Thanks a lot guys/gals.

Yes its OK to take the whole assembly out.

Sometimes heat from a hairdryer will encourage it to break loose from the ball valve.

I had one that seemed glued in that I had to cut out with dikes.

I've replaced the original Rule 700s with Tsunami 1200s.

If you are using the 1200's - which you should - they dont match the thread of just about anything but Pro-X sacs.

But use the "martinarcher method" and you'll be set

If you have Piranha pumps, all you need to do is replace the "cartridge".

standard shurflo cartridge from West Marine? The 600 or the 800/1100?

Yeah, 800/1100. I just keep a spare on hand. Quick and easy fix.
