Stange electrical issue

Recommended Posts

So last weekend, 4th of July we were out at lake pyramid and was cruising across the lake at about 25-30 for probably 15 minutes or longer, no ballast music at a low roar kinda ruff but started to calm down and then all of a sudden the boat just shut down. The only thing I saw was ignition off, everything was dead motor shut down gauges where blank. I cycled the key and nothing just a steady beep. (Honestly don't know if I slid it back to neutral) I went and turned off all the amps at the breaker, and in my panic turned off the perko switch. Checked everything, oil levels, wiring connection at the motor and relays all looked good. Turned perko switch back on and it fired right back up no issues for the rest of the day. This weekend went to Bullards, early in the morning found out that the ignition was a little loose at the panel, where the key goes, so I turned the nut and tightened it back up. Mid day after Joanne crashed and came out of her board I picked her up turned the motor off and when she was ready again I fired the boat up started pulling away, I think. Went to set the cruise and the screen said no ECU data 15, and was counting up. Most gauges were dead turned off boat waited a second and then fired it up this time with no problem. Found the ground that I tapped into for the shower did not have a good connection through the butt splice, did what I could with it and continued with no problems. The wire is a single 16 gauge wire that is grounded to a tranny bolt. Tried to follow it but it looks as if it heads up to the front of the boat. So what do you think???? I am contemplating on going to the dealer and having them plug the boat into the computer, not sure if there would be any info stored.

Tonight I ripped out the wiring to the shower and put everything back to how it was before the shower install earlier this year. Redid the butt splice that was loose but only with the original ground wire, made sure it was a good connection and taped it up. Then I wired up the shower ran the ground to the ground block up front and the positive from the accesory switch at the dash. Everything works properly and I feel better about it. I really don't know if the shower had anything to do with it but it's the only thing that has changed since last season.

So any suggestions or has anyone ever heard of or had an issue like this?

Check the main plug hanging under the dash. Mine would work loose and I found the latch for the two plug halves did not latch correctly. I used a small nylon wire zip tie to hold this plug tight together. That used to make my dash blank out but engine never died.

Dumb question, but the first shutdown on pyramid sounds like the lanyard / kill switch, no? I'm pretty sure on my boat if I intentionally pull the lanyard while the boat is running it will flash with ignition off and then give no gauges.

What was the water temp out at pyramid, btw?

65ish water temp, not bad but still a little cold. Lanyard was suggested by D-goose also, not sure it never gets touched and was intact at time of probelm, but I will keep it in mind in the future. I am hoping that since the ignition was a little loose that maybe it turned on it's own enough to turn the boat off. Thanks for the suggestion.

Checked all the connections under the dash and at the motor everything looks good.
