Goodyear Marathon tires

I bought an 05 23 LSV with an 06 Dorsey trailer. It was my understanding the boat was on a lift and the trailer was not used much. The trailer looks perfect and I dont know for sure if it was kept outside or inside. The tires looked to be in good shape no sidewall cracking etc. I hauled it over the weekend and had two tires throw the tread, one of which bent my fender. Has anyone had or heard of this with the Goodyear Marathon. Im thinking the tires are 4 years old. I have had the boat 6 months.

I threw one last year and another one last week and it did the same thing with my fender. I'm not sure how old mine were but I am assuming they were four or five years old. They looked fine but I should have replaced them when I bought the boat. I didn't because our normal trip to the ramp is only four blocks from the house. It was 100 degrees when it happened. I was on a trip to Lake Norman and still had a ways to go so I had the spare replaced right away and the rest of them replaced when I got there. No problems on the way back.

I had one do the same thing last week [ rear tire on the trailer, bent the fender nicely :( ] I will be replacing all of them , it seems like when one goes the others will follow especially when they seperate , mine are 3 years old , it was the first long haul [ 450 miles ] my usual trip is 20 to 30 miles.

How fast have you been driving since you have had the boat? Max speed for these tires is 65.

Well I'm gonna at least put a tire on it that will do the speed limit!

I'll betcha you can't tow anything over 55 legally.... :rtfm:

(depending on state.)

From my research I think that Marathons are what most people get from the trailer manufacturer. So I don't know that it's fair to say they are more prone to these issues, although I will be trying Carlisles for my next set and will be following these guidelines:

1. Maintain proper air pressure (50psi cold)

2. Staying under suggested speed (65mph)

3. Keep the sun (uv rays) off of them.

I was doing 70. The second tire blew 2 miles later. :( The tires were 6 years old, GY Marathons. Funny thing is, it was dry rout because the tread was still good.

Call the Goodyear dealer. Maybe there was a recall or they can determine if there was a manufacture problem. Otherwise there was probably some dry rot you didn’t see.

I had Marathons on my Dorsey since '03.

This year have had to add air each week to 1 of them and then finally another one blew -in the driveway thankfully.

Thats 7 years and way too long before replacing but I don't trailer much - in fact the boat was on a lift in the marina from '03 thru '08.

So probably less than 1500 actual miles on the trailer tires.

I bought Carlisles 2 weeks ago from Discount Tire for the next round.

I was doing 65 when mine went but I think they had dry rot that I didn't see and I think the heat had something to do with it. The thermometer read 102 when I stopped to have the spare replaced.

I have had both Goodyear and Carlisle go bad after 2 seasons. My opinion, they are both junk. I currently have Carlisles again and buy the certificates from Discount Tire so when they go bad again they will be replaced free. Just have to keep a close eye on them and check before each tow. You can usually catch them starting to separate at the tread in time to change it before failure.

Next time I buy trailer tires, it will not be either Goodyear or Carlisle.
