DIY trailer guide posts

Recommended Posts

The original guide posts on my trailer were pretty ratty. The covers over the foam were really chewed up. When I removed the covers from the PVC tubes, the tubes themselves with gnarled up and general beaten to death.

So, first off, I need new PVC tubes at the min. Luckily, Lowes around me sells the tubes in 5' lengths. Which is just about perfect since the original PVC posts with about 30" each.

Next, I need a way to protect my boat hull from the hard plastic of the PVC. That solution presented itself in the form of pipe insualtion tape.

In this picture, there's a comparison between the original post( in black), the replacement PVC post (bare), and the replacement post with the insulation tape..

Here's a close up of the bare and 'padded' post

Notice the spiral of the foam-rubber tape.

This last pic is from the company with the foam tape

All told, the parts cost me less than $15....we'll find out how well they work tomorrow

Damn Mike, you're on fire with the posts tonight! Looks good, I just measure mined tonght as well, 30" is just a "fuzz" longer that what mine are. I may wrap mine with that same wrap and have my mommy sew up some covers, thanks for the post, let us know how you think the tape will hold up.

Edit- do you know if that wrap is available in thicknesses greater than 1/8", like 1/2" or so?
