The new guy down the road is looking at a 2002 Wakesetter DD. He is a slalom skier and is asking me what I think?

I have never skied the Wakesetter and know the other DD may be better boats for him but has any of the crew had a chance to ski this boat????????

I told him to set up a ski with the boat but I am looking for more feedback.

I think you have to ski it to know for sure, because everyone's tastes are different.

I finally slalom skied behind my wakesetter 23XTi this weekend for the first time...after coming from my old Echelon LX. Needless to say, the slalom wake is a TAD different! :-) It's actually much better than I anticipated because it's incredibly soft, so if I keep the HO on edge, I can still hustle pretty well from turn to turn. Not exactly slalom course material, though. The 21 DD wakesetter will probably be better than my 23 due to size and weight. Both are diamond hull (at least my 2002 model is).

Good luck!

If he is a 100% slalom skier he needs a sporty or a response, but if his kids wakeboard or he wants the extra room and freeboard then it is a solid crossover boat.

Make sure it's a Wakesetter (basically a Sunsetter LX) and not just a Sunsetter. In 2002 they put the Sunsetter on the diamond hull while the Wakesetter version had the wakehull. Here is a post that shows the differences between the two hulls, so you can make sure which one it really is.

Provided it's the Wakesetter it's the same hull as the '97 Sunsetter LX's that I've skied behind regularly in the past. If I was in open water and not running the course this boat works fine. The wake is a bit larger but harder than if it's on the diamond hull, but a capable cross-over boat. The SLXI is a better cross-over boat but better ski hull, again assuming it is the Wakesetter on the wakehull. If you 100% slalom a diamond hull is a must, and even more so if you run it in the course therefore the 2002 Sunsetter, SLXI, Response, sporty would be the boats to look at. If slalom is shared amongst wakeboarding/wakesurfing etc and in an open lake the Wakesetter is a good choice. The wakehull rides better in rough water as well. As with any boat demo first...

It is a wakesetter. I told him he need to look at a Sporty, Response, Sunsetter. but his budget and the big stopper is his wife wants a walk threw open bow. Now that puts a big damper on a boat.

I fond a Sporty two Response LX two CC 196. :dontknow:

I would echo Malibudude's comments. I have skied behind that very boat, and being primarily a slalom skier, I bought a Sunsetter LXI. There is a pretty big difference in the Wakesetter (non-diamond) and Sunsetter hull. The SSLXE hull is much better for a slalom skier--you will notice the difference. Not that the WS hull is not skiable, but the SSLXI is much better for slalom. He is right though, the WS hull can be made to throw a bigger wake and will ride through rougher water much better. It just depends what you want the boat for. I am still looking for the all around boat that will throw a killer wake for boarding and surfing, go non-existant for slalom, can sleep 6 and will cruise all day for pennies. Oh well...

You just have to choose what is more important and decide for what you primarily want to use the boat for.

What is used to skiing behind?

Most of his skiing has been done behind our ski boats RLXI SSLXI CC196. He owned a 19' Bayliner.

He is looking to buy a house and did not want to get a boat now but is having problems with his boat and does not want to dump more money into it.

No kids yet.
