Propeller Shaft Squeaks????

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Over the weekend on the river I munched my prop on a rock sand bar. When the prop hit it split my key way in half and damaged my prop badly to the point it can't be repaired. I installed the new ACME 537 prop today with a new key way however when I turn the prop with my hand out of water its very squeaky. It sounds like its coming from the rubber bushing but I'm not sure if its normal for the shaft to squeak when out of water. The shaft doesn't look damaged or bent in fact the prop turns smoothly but squeaks. Does anyone know if this is normal?

Yes. It's a rubber lined bushing. It makes a horrendous noise if you accidentally put the boat in gear while motor is running on the trailer..

The bushing is obviously is water cooled so I do not suggest running the prop out of the water..

I have an old bushing that was replaced after the 1 and only time I wrapped a rope in the prop on my wall of shame in the garage.

The lining is a plastic or teflon and howls without water lubricating it.
