Driveshaft Packing

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 Sunsetter LXI that the drive shaft has never been re-packed on. I was thinking of replacing the packing. How often should it be done and I was thinking of using this:

Does anyone have any tips for packing the drive shaft. From reading on the forum it sounds like you just take the nut off and pull the old out and replace it with the new.

If you can maintain your desired drip...then your packing doesn't need to be replaced.

Personally - I go for a drip a second. Some go for a drip every 10 seconds. Whatever you decide - if you can adjust the packing nut and get that result - your packing is all good. You can replace the packing as a matter of preventative maintenance...if you are in to that sort of thing. But it's not necessary I don't think.

I recently replaced my packing with that stuff. It was an extremely easy job. The hardest part was removing the old packing. For that I bought a small pick and hook tool set from my local parts store. I followed the instructions for putting the new stuff on, hand-tightened the nut and locked it in place and I have literally no dripping, yet the shaft spins freely.

I can't say whether or not you SHOULD do it, but if you decide to I highly recommend that product.
