External resistor need help!!

Recommended Posts

Changed the coil & points in my '87 Skier. Coil requires external resistor, but can't find existing external resistor. Where might I find it or how do I install a new one?

If it has a resistor it's either a porcelain block type or a resistor wire. If it's the block type it is usually mounted on the block near the distributor and is about 1" X 3". If it's a wire type it will be in-line going to the + side of the coil. Depending on the brand of coil that you have you may be able to find an electronic point replacement that doesn't require a resistor.

I was told my boat had a resistor wire in the wiring harness. My boat mechanic could not locate it. He ran a new wire with a "block" type resistor, but it turned out my problem was the carb.

Get rid of your points and get a Pertronix electronic conversion.

On my 86, I have a Ford 351W, with external resistor. It is the white ceramic block type. Its mounted on the drivers side, just on the inside of the of the valve cover.
