Extreme Trailer Brakes

Recommended Posts

My trailer brakes stopped working and I had them bleed and they worked for a short while. But two things happened. 1) lots of brake fluid flew out around the calibers and made a mini oil slick and 2) the master cylinder was bone dry. Has anyone had to replace the seals in the calipers? Is it hard or how much to have it done?

Pretty easy to do, just pull off the caliper, use a little compressed air to remove the piston (carefully of course) clean and then replace the seals. Put it all back together and then bleed the brakes.

If you search how to rebuild a caliper in google you should find tons of info and step by step instructions.

First.

You need to identify exactly where the fluid is coming from.

You mention that you had the brakes bled, maybe the tech. left the bleeder nipple loose.

Extreme trailers have rubber lines going from the axle to the calipher, maybe the line is damaged?

Bleeder nipple is tight. 1st thing I checked. Rubber hose is clean as well. Fluild is coming from inside the back side of the piston and getting all over the backside of the rim and tire.

If you've never done a caliper rebuild before you may want to get some help, it may be easy for someone who has done that before but if you couldn't bleed your own brakes I would have a mechanic do it or a friend you trust to do it right.

I have rebuild both calipers on my extreme trailer. It's not hard to do it you have basic hand tools and an air compressor. The hardest part is getting the piston out of the caliper, thats were the air compressor is handy. The extreme trailers use UNIQUE FUNCTIONAL PRODUCTS for trailer components. They also have down loadable manuals on their web site.

Replacement pads, pistons, piston's seal and dust boots can also be purchased from any auto part stores using the front caliper of an 1997-2000 Kia Sephia.

DON'T BUY Re manufactured Kia Sephia calipers they have not be modified to fit the trailer axle.
