Water Pump Troubleshooting

Tough day on the lake yesterday. Heard my belt snap, replaced it, and tubed for about 1.5 hours. Headed back to launch at a higher speed (not wide open) and engine sputtered and overheated. Shut it down, let it cool off and checked output side of pump - no water. Impeller looked fine, nothing in screen going into motor, couldn't find a block. Got towed in.

Also found what looked like brass metal flakes around the edge of engine compartment. Chewed up bearing??

I am thinking about changing the pump (about 4 years old) but am not technically astute enough to be sure that this is the problem.

It is a 96 Sunsetter direct drive with Indmar Monsoon engine.

Any thoughts? I hate to waste time and money taking it to a mechanic if it is as simple as replacing the pump.

Thanks! This Forum is Great!

First thing I would do is to swap out the impeller and gasket with new ones. If that doesn't fix it check the thermostat. If those don't solve it swap the pump.

The impeller can look fine and not work. That has happened to many others besides me.

Thanks! I will swap the impeller and see if I get any water on the output side of the pump. I am also going to check that the belt didn't loosen and maybe not be turning the pump.

I see you are from The Triangle. What lake do you usually go to? We like Falls during the week and Gaston on the weekends.
