97 Response LX will not start

Maybe get some sage advice on what is most likely happening with my boat. Story is - out on the lake, cruising around, no skiing, just motoring around enjoying the boat. Engine begins to cough and run rough for about a minute and finally dies. Suspect fuel problems and immediately check gage which indicates half tank. Try cranking engine - engine turns over - but no start. When turning ignition on, get gage indications and hear fuel pump activate. After the embarassing tow back to slip, I do some investigating and discover that fuel tank appears to be dry inspite of gage indication. Bad sender probably - can fix that later. Put some gas in tank and think I'm on the way but not happening. Engine just cranks but does not start. Primed engine multiple times via the ignition switch on and off routine - No start. So far I have replaced inline fuel filter and fuel filter immediately after fuel pump. Bled air from fuel system via the schraeder valve. Still no start. Next possible actions: buy fuel pressure tester check fuel pressure - buy spark plug tester check for spark. Any ideas? Something about running a boat out of gas that requires special restart procedure? This boat has always been relatively maintenance free up until now. Only 200 hours on boat inspite of its age. Appreciate any ideas. Also anybody know of a good fuel system pressure tester for less? Thanks! Mike

Attach a fuel pressure gauge at the rail to make sure you are getting pressure. If not, start back tracking towards the tank to find out where the fuel has stopped.

I have always heard don't ever run these fuel pumps dry. I think the fuel lubricates the pump. Might have ruined the fuel pump.

:plus1:

Letting the boat sit for too long can have the same effect. I just replaced mine last spring.

Appreciate the input. Really hope I didn't toast the fuel pump by running it dry. Probably purchase a fuel system pressure tester and get on with trying to diagnose. Thanks for the feedback!

I was just out with a Mastercraft owner who shared his out of gas experience on the water. He managed to keep restarting the boat to finally get back to shore and long story short turns out he fried the fuel pump as a result of running it dry. Assuming a Malibu would have a similar end to the story.
