Where is all the oil?

Recommended Posts

Specs: 2008 23 Wakesetter LSV with a Hammerhead running SAE 40 Rotella T1

Did an oil change and filter before winterizing last year and used infamous the drain and wait method. At that time all I got out was about 3 liters (oil was full on the dipstick). This spring I decided to set up a pump and suction it out like others have as I was never comfortable that maybe half the oil was old oil. Warmed up the boat and pumped out what I could and let it drain for an hour.... I managed to get out 3.5 liters and left the filter on (worth 1/2 liter) . Bit more than the fall but not the 5 - 6 liters I was expecting. I don't have the updated dipstick but I also have not noticed any oil burning. Anyone have the same experience or tricks to get more out ?

There is a very detailed way of getting the oil out. It involves jacking up one side of the trailer, I think the right side, not sure. Look around here for the thread on it or ask Wakegirl. Welcome to Hammerhead ownership. Man I love my Monsoon.

EDIT: found it here.

Maybe this should be a tech/diy article?

i know a lot (just can't remember it) and i'm too lazy to search for it.

isn't there a thread(s) about a tech-note re: dip-stick change for the hammerhead?

oem dip-stick was too long allowing the engine to run on the shy side with oil.

Thanks for the quick response.... I will try the jack and "chaser" oil. The next improvement I'm adding is a remote oil filter at the next filter change..... spending an hour crammed in the locker fighting my way into and out to get the filter and clean up the mess is no fun!!!

The hammerhead with cats has been a great motor for me once I learn all the tricks.

At least I don't have to revert to flipping the boat upside down to get all the oil out

Just wondering if this is a problem with all hammerhead engines, or just the newer ones? Mine is a 2000 and I don't seem to have a problem getting all the oil out, but maybe I'm wrong? After an oil change the oil looks new on the dipstick.

Funny story about hammerhead ownership.... first time on the water tonight this season... idled out of the marina fine.... went to go on plane and the service required waring comes on... my first outing of the year was about 20 yards... back to the dealer on Tuesday. I think you deserve a Touche for that one
