2001 Sunsetter Lxi - Fuel Filter location and replace?

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 2001 Sunsetter LXi with the base Monsoon 320hp engine and eager to get on the water but not before I do some maintenance. I've got a lot pulled apart but can't find out how to access the fuel filter on the tank without removing some boards. Does anyone have an idea how to access the filter and replace as well as the filter part no.? I reached my arm into the fuel shut off hole but couldn't feel anything or see anything.

Thanks for any help. Much appreciated.

It's very easy. If you look along the top of the carpeted panel (the one with your light attachment and the shut off hole) you will find 3 screws and just take out the screws and the you can pull the panel towards you as you are sitting on the swim platform. It's wedged in there pretty good but don't worry you won't break it, it's flexible. Just pull it back and you will have access.

Keep in mind there are 2 filters. The one of which you speak and there is also one on the motor itself.

Good luck.

Don't be shocked if you only have the one filter in your trunk. My engine (2002 Monsoon) does not have the high pressure filter after the pump. People will swear up and down that all the Monsoons of those years have them, but they don't. Mine doesn't, and I know what a filter looks like and have followed the fuel lines from the fuel pump to the injectors and I do not have a high pressure filter.

And you dont need to remove the 'floor' completely out of your trunk to get to the filter. Once you remove the upright panel, the floor will slide around enough to give you access to all you need on top of your fuel tank, including the filter. I have never been able to get that floor out of the truck, for fear of breaking it, and have had plenty of room in there to change my filter, as well as my fuel sending unit, without taking the floor out.

My 01 Slxi does not have the High Pressure filter either. But wondering, would it be a benefit to put one in?

Thanks everyone, I went out and removed the back panel. It had 4 screws up top and 5 on the bottom. The panel was very flexible as you indicated and easy to pull out. I lifted up the bottom panel but did not try to take it out. The fuel filter was right there mounted to the interior panel. My fuel rail/pump assembly does not have a hi-pressure side filter. This is a fairly high point in the line.... should I expect some fuel to leak but not a lot? Thanks and safe boating for you all.

I would not add an extra filter on the hi-p side if it's not designed with one now. The pressure drop may be to much for the injectors and the related calibration. A certain amount of pressure is needed to help atomize the fuel in the combustion chamber... These are just my thoughts.

No...None at all. With your fuel injected Monsoon, you should have no leaks anywhere along the fuel delivery system. If you have one, tighten up that connection, or otherwise identify where the fuel is coming from and get it fixed. Bad things could happen if you don't.

When I changed my fuel pump, I found that the red dye from the Sta-Bil in the fuel helped identify any potential leaks using white paper towels.

Thanks, do you have the part no. for the fuel pump? Did you change is as maint item or did you have a problem and then changed it out? I'm a little worried about the left over gas in this boat and considered finding a way to drain it.... any thoughts?

I think T-bone was asking if fuel will leak out while changing the filter, which a little will.

Read this to source an HP pump.
