Summerizing after a long layup

Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 Sunsetter VLX. Due to having a new baby last year, and rennovating a house, the boat has been winterized since September 2008. I need to summerize the boat for this summer.

When the boat was winterized, the fuel was double-stabilized (approx. 1/4 tank), the oil was changed, and the engine drained and fogged. The boat has been stored under cover for the layup period.

My questions:

  1. What tune-up parts should I replace? I am thinking the fuel filters, rotor, cap, spark plugs, new impeller and oil change.
  2. Do I need to drain the fuel in the tank, or can I simply burn out the old mized with fresh fuel?

Thanks for the help.

Almost 2 yr old gas? I think I'd drain as much of it as I could. Then top it off with fresh gas. Might be still good, but I think I'd rather test it on my lawn mower than the boat.

Tune up is always good, regardless of the boat's history. Only necessity in my book would be the impeller.

What is the best way to drain the old fuel? Would is siphon work?
