Box Anchor

...and I highly recommend it.

I went into Wakesports Unlimited in Tustin a few weeks back with some cash in my pocket so flammable it scared me, and a few things on my list. As I walked around I saw a Slide Anchor brand Box Anchor. I've known since forever that all of the hot shot boaters at Lake Havabrew buy and swear by them and I made the conscious decision that I would no longer reset the anchor on the sandbar, so I went for it. They didn't have the small one, so I had to buy the large one, which will accommodate a 30' cabin cruiser. I took it out that weekend, but didn't need it because I just tied up to my friend's pontoon boat on a small lake off the main channel.

This past weekend, we went out, and I was able to put it through it's paces. The little sandbar we frequent is on the main channel, so there's more traffic than most of y'all see on any given weekend with a river width about equal to Marine Stadium in Long Beach. Frankly, i'm confident everyone of you would be terrified to drive there, hahaha. Anyways, I unfolded and locked it in place, threw it in the water, tied it off, and the damned thing didn't even BUDGE all day long. I tied a rope off the stern to my friend's pontoon so my stern was facing towards the reeds/sand and the bow towards the river/upstream so I didn't get swamped at all day. I don't know why this simple design works so well, but it does. Every time a larger wake would come and push the boat towards land, it would simply turn a little, and reset itself.

When it was time to leave, it took us about 15 minutes to get it out of the water because, like clockwork, it would reset as soon as we moved to the right/left/whatever. The only way we found was easy enough was to just get RIGHT ABOVE it and pull up.

Long story short, get one. They are definitely on the steepside, but well worth the money.

i'm kind of mad i didn't splurge before. seriously an incredible step-up, and it helps increase the relaxation factor because i don't have to worry about my boat moving.

I know it's one of the best investments I've made to the boating accessory arsenal  .

I own one, i have only used the same box anchor system since 05" i wouldn't go out without it. i also bought the system to retrieve it using the boat to pull it up. (large round bouy, stainless steel ring and 6' rope.) it works great when you get it stuck in rocks or heavy deep mud.

Exactly how does that work?

For some reason I have fought with using all kinds of different sizes of anchors and chain combinations for years. Always had rotten luck for some reason getting the things to bite no matter how much chain or whatever else I tried.

Went and bit the bullet for a box anchor last year. Done deal. Best money I've spent on a boat in a long time. Wife even loves it. No more worries about drifting when anchored. If you don't have one, get one.

I saw an article somewhere where they said they used a second one on the beach. Anyone have experience with that or should I get the stick anchor with the slide hammer on thingy on it?

I am looking to pick one up as well (small box anchor). What anchor line are you using? I assume no chain. I am always in fresh water, 20-40 ft deep, so I was thinking 1/2" 100ft of nylon braid. You guys running the same?

you don't need a chain, that's what the rod is for. I only have 60' of rope on mine and will only anchor in water less than 30'. Anything deeper than that and I'll be subject to rollers. YMMV

I use a 50' anchor buddy.

Funny, I was struggling with my anchor over memorial day and just found this thread.. :yahoo:

I can't agree more, the piece of mind knowing the anchor will hold and not thinking are we moving every 30 seconds will really add to my relaxing level.

Thanks guys.

Don't use one of these on the beach use a "Sand Spike" or "Slide Anchor" on the beach.

+1 how does that work? I would like to know.

The only thing I can think of is you clip it on the line when you want to leave and as you try to drive off it slides toward the anchor and floats it to the surface. Will that work when it is stuck?

Hey Nate,

Did you make this yourself? Not sure if I missed it or what. Did you do a build thread? Hows it working for you?

Another Plus1.gif for the box anchor. It holds like glue and you certainly don't have to worry about your boat drifting.

I'm also interested to hear how that retriever works. We just troll over the anchor and give a good tug on the rope.

Another guy started a thread about building one, and I sort of hi-jacked it with my build  His turned out better than mine, he welded his, I didn't feel like bothering our shop guys so I jb welded and screwed mine. Pretty easy actually, hardest part is getting the locking mechanism lined up. It was fun, certainly time consuming, probably had $20 in material on top of what I all ready had. I'll try to find the thread....Bill, you must have amnesia, you were all over this thread :-)

Oh yeah, how does it work? I've been out twice this year, didn't have a rope for it at the time, so I don't fricken know yet

Thanks everyone!

Lucky for me I found a few on Craiglook.com

Found a guy in N. CA. with one. He dropped it off at Kinkos this morning for me for $100.

Ha! You know it. I remember the thread. But couldn't find it for some reason. And never did see the finished pics of yours.

I'll be interested to hear how well yours works..... being JB Welded & only 13 lbs.
