PP and Tach

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 VLX and the Tach and Perfectpass gauges arent working. The Tach just goes all over the place and the PP works, but the display goes freaky just randomly showing letters and numbers and always changing if its on or off. All the other gauges work just fine. Is it a ground issue? Are my gauges bad?

Most likely a ground issue. Try running a direct ground for the PP, if that fixes it that should tell the tale. I had that problem with the tach in my previous boat (2000 Supra Legacy), it ended up being water in the ECM that controls the gauges. But since both the tach and PP are doing it I'd think it's most likely a grounding issue.

the ground for the pp display is implemented via a couple of brass studs that protrude from the rear of the unit.

the 'T' of the brass stud rests against the solder side of a printed circuit board and is prone to corrosion.

plan on a couple of hours to pull the dash, tear down the display and clean it up.

there are pix around on this site, try searching.

i trailer to whitmore lake most days; give a shout.

Thanks guys for the response. I will try both ideas. Little nervous about pulling apart the gauge but what the worst that can happen. I wreck it and have to spend $300 to fix it.

Tvano. We are out there all the time. We have a White with Blue stripe and chrome wakesetter graphic VLX. We hang out a lot at the cove by the church. Hope to meet you out there sometime.

will be watching for you but we hit it pretty early; don't share well.

we are typically finishing up the barefoot run at 6am then start hammering the course.

like to be clear of the pond before the natives start rolling out wakes.

hoping to spend more late morning time on the pond this year; just retired and looking for a 'second shift' on the pond.

white/yellow/black response (closed bow).

give a shout.

holler if you want someone to watch over your shoulder if you decide to crack the case on that gage.
