high altitude prop

Anyone running a high altitude prop? I just got my boat and still breaking it in...but running pretty high rpms at 30. What is ur top speed and are you happy with the prop? Seems great for the hole shot, but what about cruising.

Do you really live in Illinois? Why are you considering a high alt prop? Personally, I live at 5400 feet and regularly ski at 7800 feet. I have never felt the need to change props yet. I know that it might be an issue if you weight 300 lbs and you are tying to get up on a slalom ski but please be more specific about your location and your typical usage. Changing props is like changing gears on a bicycle. It all depends on where you are going.

I do live in illinois and was told that the moonsoon was underpowered for a 23LSV when it was loaded w people, ballast and the wedge. I was coming from a 23LSV w a 8.1L and the engine was discontinued right before I ordered my boat...and I didn't think the LS3 was the right motor based on power curves. After boat shopping for 3+ months, most dealerships recommended this set-up. So now I have a boat that runs at 4k rpm at low 30s. Since I'm still breaking it in, I haven't taken it any higher.

Once you are used to a high rpm prop your boat will seem doggy without it.

I have two perfectly good stainless props and the only time I change back to the standard prop is my trip to the Sacramento Delta which is mainly a cruise outing. Sea level .

The advantage of the high altitude prop is that my top speed is uniform even with the bimini top up and with 3 or 4 passengers.

Lake Billy Chinook is 1945 feet ASL and is our closest lake and Cultus is about 4500 feet ASL, Cougar is 1690 ASL..

For me the low pitch prop is mandatory even though I have a fast boat. One other advantage is that it is easier to maintain a more perfect speed because the engine is turning over a few more rpm's and does not lug down when a big skier makes his cuts.

I need to upgrade mine too. Got the 537 on a 340 monsoon, was thinking of going with the OJ 468 or 475 or the acme 1235 or 1273. I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make. Right now my boat is a dog out of the hole with full ballast and full wedge, and if we have a lot of people forget the ballast at all, cause it doesn't get out of the hole with it. I'm also a little worried abotu trailer clearance.

I never had an issue with trailer clearance with my extreme trailer when I went from the 537 to the 1235 on my 06vlx. The 1235 was way more holeshot vs the 537 on that Monsoon motor.

That's good to hear on both points. I'm seriously tired of hanging on to the rope for what seems like forever before it planes out. The holeshot on this boat right is terrible. I'm at an alt of 5280, and it's almost not even worth wakeboarding behind if you want ballast.

Sounds like it's worth the loss of top end for you then.

Big time. This weekends frustration was off the charts. Don't even know why they'd sell a boat in denver with the 537......... Live and learn I guess......

At your at that elevation get the OJ 468, it'll give you a better hole shot than the 1235, the RPM's run ~1k (20mph=3,200rpm roughly) above the speed and you'll burn more fuel but sooooooo worth it. You won't have any cleanance problems w/ either the OJ's (468/475) or Acme's (1235) on an extreme trailer. You'll be in love again...lol

Appreciate the help, both on here and WW. Right now I'm not in a happy place about my boat, hopefully it fix the issues. I can't see it burning any more gas than when it's dragging my board thrugh the water and not getting on plane for 3-5 mins. We went through half a tank yesterday trying to figure it out.

One more casual observation:

With the lower pitch prop you do not really lose top speed under most practical conditions. It is most pronounced with only the driver aboard.

Your top speed with a load on board say when you have finished skiing/boarding in the cove at the far end of the lake is within an mph or 2. When we run that far we often have 4 aboard and have gone the distance to find flat water. On the way back we are in chop or boat traffic and are scooting along at well below full rpm's. My speed is limited by the choppiness enroute.

Plus I like to run with the bimini top up to reduce sunburn for myself and the passengers.

So for me even though I can go 52 with no bimini alone and a standard prop at 1945 ASL it is worth it to be able to go 49 with the bimini up and a couple of passengers. Truth is the run back to the boat ramp is mostly around 32 anyway , maybe 40.

It doesnt matter because the Supercharged jetski goes by me at 70 anyway.

1235 prop completely changed the boat. No problem with the holeshot, feels much more powerful and responsive.

Cool glad it worked out for you.

Huh??

Top end is top end and it means just that. The 1235 prop increases rpms at a lower throttle response and hit s the rev limiter faster, yes you do actually loose 3-5 mph depending on boat at full throttle. Not sure what boat you have.

I'm pretty sure I've lost 5-10 mph with the high alt. prop on top-end

I haven't pushed all the way to the top end, but I did do 35 last night, with room to spare, and that's about 8 under my top end from before

Mu old 23 w the 8.1L went over 50...so I'm feeling a little inadequate with this boat! I've gotten mine up to 35 at 4500 rpm.

I lost about 8mph off the top end when I switched from the 537 to the 475, but we wakeboard with a lot of weight in the boat so it is worth it. We don't race to the glass, if we did it might be a different story.

Sometimes we do race to the glass...the have to go thru two lakes to get to the lake we board on with 1 long no wake channel. Going afterwork sometimes its a challenge to get there in time. Plus there are a ton on go fast boats on the lake and if you go too slow you'll get ran over. And every once in a while I like to show em who's actually the boss up on a smaller lake....I'm 1/2 way across the lake before they even plane out...at least I was. :(
