indmar monsoon timming

Recommended Posts

i am wondering if anyone can tell me how to time a monsoon engine in a 2000 vlx. i had to replace the engine over the winter. i have the distributor in at 0 degrees #1 at tdc. i need to know how to disable the electronic advance to set the base timing. am i right by thinking i have to jump the two wire plug at the distributor and if thats right does it stay plugged in or is it removed.

Yes, you have to disable the EST during the timing process. On my engine it is done at the diagnostic connector. My timing is 10 BTDC. That is pretty much the only number I have ever heard for indmar engines.

From a previous post from someone here on TMC:

For 320 monsoon, find the 10 pin DLC (data link connector) on the back of the motor over the transmission (black/gray plug with cap). Each terminal is labeled. Get engine up to operating temp (160). With engine idling, jumper terminals A & B. Idle will raise to 1000 rpm and spark advance is shunted. You are now in base timing mode. 10 degrees BTDC is the spec. I have no experience setting timing other than stock, so play at your own risk. When you remove the jumper, idle rpm will drop back to the normal 650 rpm.

Haven't actually done it personally though.
