Tachometer dispaying incorrect rpms

Recommended Posts

My tachometer sometimes shows rpms 1000-2000 higher than what they actually are.

Most of the time when I'm pulling a wakeboard, the rpms are (I believe) a little over 2000.

Every so often I've noticed the tach will show around 4000 (or some other very high number) at the same speed. The engine is not revved up or anything, just cruising at it's normal speed.

Does anyone know if this could be the tach itself or the sensor on the engine?

Need a little more info. What is your speed at “x” RPM?

We usually wakeboard at around 20mph. The problem is, the tach sometimes wants to read 4000 or something instead of the correct 2000 something. It only does this about every other run. Sometimes I can go half a day without noticing it.
