Trailer Lighting - White Light?

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about adding some white lights to my trailer, right around the wheels / axles.

I think either on the sides of the trailer facing inward, or on the bottom facing down.

Three reasons -

Light up the trailer better for the evening loadings.

Better visibility of the wheels / roadside for night driving.

A little trailer bling.

I saw several options on eTrailer for 4 - 10 LED units, surface mount.

Wondering if anyone has done this, what worked, what didn't work, does it help .....

I installed led white reverse lights on the back of my trailer and also a set that shoot down behind the rear wheels. All operate only when in reverse. The lights that shoot down by the rear wheels are to see the ground that the wheels are about to roll over.

You might be interested in this thread.

You could also read this thread. But, it's old and some of the links don't work and, I don't have the pics. of the reverse lights in action anymore.

Another old thread with a lot of dead links but, good discussion.

Not sure what all those posts contain that Pete linked up, but I'm pretty sure you'll want to consult your local po-po's. I believe blue is restricted in most areas for an application like what you're talking about because it's for law enforcement/emergency vehicles. Might want to see if they'll have a problem with white, I'm sure you could get away with it just for reversing though like what Pete's doing.

Here is what I find for Indiana. No specific exclusions in the "trailer" section, but this limits "Motor Vehicles".

I have a few State Police friends - I think I will ask them.

IC 9-19-6-18

Fender lamps; running-board courtesy lamps; back-up lamps

Sec. 18. (a) A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two (2) side cowl or fender lamps that emit an amber or a white light without glare.

(b) A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than one (1) running-board courtesy lamp on each side that emits a white or an amber light without glare.

© A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two (2) back-up lamps either separately or in combination with other lamps. However, a back-up lamp must not be lighted when the motor vehicle is in forward motion.

As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.7.
