replacing tachometer/PP gauge in dash

I just received a replacement PP gauge with built-in tachometer to replace my intermittent PP dash unit.

Replacement is likely straight forward but where do I start? Do I need to pull off the black foam outer shell to gain access to the rear of the unit, or go from behind where the speedo lines join together. There doesn't seem to be much room or access from behind.

Suggestions?

start by pulling the negative terminal from the battery; it's close work behind the dash and you don't want to short anything out.

the instrument panel on my '04 has 2 screws at the bottom (thru a billet 'malibu' logo) and 1 (maybe 2) screws at the top.

pull the ip out a bit to access the the rear of the panel.

the rest is pretty obvious.

it may be a good idea to take some digital pix as soon as you expose the rear of the ip.

digital pix are cheap and worth a thousand words.

if no pix then consider drawing some diagrams with color codes.

Here's some pics. I think your dash may be similar. The black arrows are where I removed three screws. The dash pod then needs pried out away from the rest of the dash.

I also saw a thread on re-soldering the brass connections from the back of the gauge to the PCB. Will do that before the install.
