Coil Setup

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if the older 1986-2001 models of the gm mercruiser 5.7 had a resistor wire in the ignition system. One of mine is pink with a yellow stripe with runs down to the starter. I know the primary is the purple one and the gray one with a black ground but was wondering about the pink with yellow stripe (its connectd to the coil along with the purple)

Yeah the purple wire is the +12V input form the alternator. This diagram helped me big time when I replaced the coil with an aftermarket Pertronix coil and upgraded to a Pertronix Ignitor ignition module instead of the old points system. The pink with yellow stripe wire is to provide a good 12 Volts to the coil from the battery during starting (when the starter solenoid is closed). The rest of the time the purple wire will have a good 12Volts or more from the alternator.

<div><br></div><div>No - there was no external resistor.  The stock coil had an internal resistor like most aftermarket coils.  Both the purple and pink/yellow strip rings go on the +12 coil contact.</div>
