Adding a Depth Gauge

I am looking to add a depth gauge to my 98 Response.

What gauge would you recommend and how tough is the install?

I added the "factory" depth gauge. I was pretty easy. Epoxy the puck inside the hull, let it cure. Run the wire inside the stringer to the helm, plug into the dash module. Tap into switched power to power the module. Done! By far the hardest part is fishing the wire through the stringer.

Thanks for the info. Do you remember the cost of the complete package?

Has any one used non- Malibu depth gauge?? If so which one would you recommend? Cost? Ease of install?

I've used one from faria(?). Works fine. You just have to decide if you'd rather have an in-hull design or not. In hulls are not supposed to perform as well but work just fine. I'd go with whatever makes it more stock to keep it nice.

Hummin Bird makes a good one too. Runs about $90.00. Important part of the install is the placement of the transducer "puck" It needs to be on a flat part of the hull in the bilge area, and you need to take care when mixing & appling the epoxy to make sure no air bubbles get into it. This reduces the signal.

Props to you for the install, I usually do everything myself but this is something that I would have a dealer install because I wouldn't know how to calibrate it.

There is no calibration. I thought there would be some, but the dealer told me no. It works perfectly.

I think the module and puck were about $275.

I checked with my dealer last winter and they stated around $500 for parts and install. Not sure on the brand they install in newer BU's, but this one would read through the factory LED display. Not sure if you are looking for the same type, but there's a ruff estimate for you for a dealer install.

keep in mind that the shiny black liner in the engine compartment is not the hull and you are likely to have air gaps if that is what you epoxy to.

i can get to raw fiberglass at the ski pylon mounting bolt on my direct drive.
