Question about paint

I scored a great deal on a 90 Sunsetter Euro F3. Unfortunately the color scheme is/was Pink/Mauve. I've already had the interior re-upholstered and now want to see about changing the exterior colors. I'm trying to do it as inexpensively as possible, so I just want to redo the two stripes on the exterior, not the entire boat. So my question is this: Is it possible to redo the stripes with marine paint (guessing a lacquer product) and not gelcoat? I've had a couple of local body shops look at it and they say no problem to just mask the stripes and paint them and clear coat over. One guy even has some pics of a Malibu that he's done it to and it looks pretty good, but obviously that's just a picture. So, anyone have any experience with this or suggestions?

Thanks!
