Look along the base plate for #'s for the carb.

Is the motor just running out of power at the ssame rpm all the time? If so it could be timing or ignition related. But it sounds like your looking to do some carb work. Are you having any other issues?

Thanks for the reply and yes it starts breaking down at about 3800 rpm.

You can open the primaries slowly and it will rev freely but when you open it quickly it revs to 3800 and then starts breaking down , sometimes say 1 in 20 goes it will run properly as in not break down very frustrating .

There are many possibilities per your description. A breakdown at higher rpm could be fuel supply related, so check all the filters, fuel pump output, float level and any debris in the carb restricting fuel flow. It could also be in the ignition, I would look at the distributor cap and see if there is any corrosion.

Sounds like ignition to me. I had a buddy's boat do the same thing. How old is the rig has the plugs been changed, check the wires also. The distributor would be the next stop. Change it to electronic ignition if it is not.
