Although not lube related, it is recommended to turn the wheel all the way to the right (at least on my boat) to make sure that the exposed components are all pulled in.

I put trailer marine bearing grease on the exposed part of the steering shaft and run it lock to lock a few times. Can't hurt anything. I also lube the throttle cables with the same stuff pulling the throttle lever all the way back and fourth.
