I got this reply from my boat listing on Craigslist...Thankfully, the Crew warned me about these types Rockon.gif!!

I will like to know more about its condition and possibly

have more pictures of it I will be very glad to have more

pictures of it. Do as well advise on the least amount you

will like to give it away. I will be very glad to conclude

this as soon as possible. Due to the nature of my work, I

will not be able to travel out of the United Kingdom to come

for the inspection. I will however be needing your full

contact address so that I can forward it to my shipping agent

here in the United Kingdom who will be coming over there for

the inspection and shipping. Thanks again and hope to hear

from you soon..

Warmest Regards,

scott smith

Do you mean deliver the boat to England? I think we can get there by water Surprised.gif

Hehe, probably would take more time than you or I have to contribute.

Open a bogus email account on Yahoo or Hotmail or whatever. Then respond to him, tell him what a sweet boat it is, how much you girlfriend loves it, how your looking forward to buying a new boat, etc.

Then give him a bogus address. Heres a good one.

1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW

Washington, DC 20500

Lead the guy on. Waste his time. Screw him before he screws someone else.

It's a sport known as scambaiting. More info here.

If you do, don't bring him here.

Yea, you don't want to leave a trail of any kind.... to yourself or anyone else. Who knows who the guy is or what he's capable of doing.

I have tried it a few times. The furthest I got was to the point that I told him I'd sent payment to him via WU. He went in to their local office & tried to claim it. Of course they denied him. So I looked up the WU offices in his town & told him I mistakenly sent it to another office. After a few tries, and subsequent denials, he was pretty bent out of shape about it & it got pretty colorful. It was definitely good for a laugh considering what he would have done to someone who wasn't so innocent. That site is full of guy's stories about how far they have been able to push them. It's outrageous.

Scott Smith, that's original. I wonder if he's distantly related to John Rozenboom! Yes, play with him but cover your tracks, it's fun and takes away from their time to screw someone else if they know they can't get anything from you!!

I considered messing with him, but did not want my email address involoved....I like the idea of creating an email "alibi", but and messing with him but, to me, falls into the same "take more time than you or I have to contribute" category...I'll leave him alone.....

I am still waiting for offers on the boat Whistling.gif

Why do the scam artists all have the same grammar barriers? I bet if you could hear them write they would all have some identical weird dialect.

It's always a buyer beware scenario. FWIW, I just bought my house via Craiglist. As well as a new dresser that amazingly matches my wife's grandma's old bedroom set. And bought a beautiful old bedroom set for my daughter, both deals were fantastic. Sold lots of stuff on Craigslist, including my last snowmobile in March '09 and my I/O in May of '09.

When selling, it is cash only, always face to face, at a neutral location. When buying, I have always gone to the person's house, cash. Communication starts with an email or two, then I (or them) quickly pick up the phone and get a feel for the person, their intentions, etc. It's really not hard to do good business on Craigslist, you just have to take some basic steps to make sure you're not preyed upon by the odd bad apple (which I've yet to encounter).

I get lots of responses where the grammar is terrible and you can tell they don't even know what they're responding to.

Lately the responses have been along these lines..."what a coincidence, I live in the (insert what region of C.L. your add is on here) Are you sure you want to sell your (thing) You should click this link (and they give some hyper link) It will really change your life."

The last thing I ever do is click a link. And, I don't bother wasting my own time responding. Just last week, on my way up to Sacramento, I drove about 90 miles to deliver something I sold on C.L. Me and the buyer traded emails for a week, I never talked to him on the phone but figured he was an older guy. I told him it was gonna take me 1.5 hrs. to get to him and I'd be on a very tight schedule. It went off without a hitch. He was there when he said he would be and so was I. $30 in my pocket and a broken inversion table to him. Good deal.

I've only been stood up once on C.L. where the guy arranged a meeting and he never showed up. I was pissed, I called him and let his wife know I wasn't happy that he was "sleeping". Oh well.

I guess there is a huge amount of scammers coming from Nigeria. I was able to trace the IP address for guy who contacted me & guess what.... Nigeria. And it was obvious english wasn't his first language.

There are a number of guys on that 419 site who actually are able to track down the scammer & pin him to multiple scams. It's like a way of life there.

BTW, I use CL a lot too.... for buying & selling. I use basic common sense practices like you guys listed & rarely (if ever) have problems.

A few years ago I took a moving truck to Seattle & bought a fridge, range, dishwasher & washer & dryer from several different people & brought it all back. CL had not taken off in Spokane yet & the savings was way more than the cost of gas & time to get it.

You drove 90 miles to sell something for $30..?? I'd say you lost money on that deal, did you just not want to throw it away or maybe you meant $300.

I have all but lost faith in CL. I'm buying a car right now actually from CL but I give up on posting and trying to sell things on there.

I didn't want to throw it away. I did only get $30 for it. But, I literally picked it out of someone's trash. And, I was driving right by the place on Saturday anyway.

So, last night I put a post on C.L. saying I'm looking to buy a certain model hand gun. Got an email for one today. C.L. seems to be working pretty good for me.

The tip off for me is when their email never refers to what you're selling specifically. They always say "I would like to buy your item", or "this is just what I have been looking for."

As you can see, the OP's email he got could work for just about anything, nowhere does it mention a boat.

Also be careful when posting this as "buy it now" on ebay. I listed a few items on there as buy it now and was constantly getting scam buyers. Luckily Ebay caught all of these and notified me before I even got a chance to read their messages.

I did sell a broken amp on ebay using buy it now for like $50 or $75. The guy seemed pretty sketchy, having me keep the weight and package size to a bare minimum, and his phone number came up listed in Jamaica. He also kept swapping addresses. In the end the money came through so I was happy.

I have had good luck with CL. Sure I get scammers but they are very easy to pick out usually. Boy when you really want to be rid of something just post it in the free section. Go get a cup of coffee come back and immediately remove the item. Respond to the first email, delete the rest....item gone in 1 hour or less. Did not even have to go to the dump!!

Lately though sales have been slow. I have a few things to be rid of an very few responses. I have some TT bars brand new in box I am selling very cheap no one wants?? I think they will sell in Feb. when people are more in training mode.

I got this email response from "Mary" today.

Notice she doesn't mention the item and it seems fishy she's willing to "give away" a ~$600 used handgun.

Anybody man enough to click the hyperlink?

Hi,

I got your email.

I had some problems sending the attachments so I uploaded them to a free image host.

Take a look and if its what you were looking for then let me know, i'm not looking for any payment for it as i dont need it anymore.

http://img23a.fileshosters.com

ok bye.

Mary

I think I just signed myself up for every cheap viagra email out there by giving this person my email.

Ha ha, jokes on them, I don't need that stuff!

What's a TT bar? I know what a Tiki bar is but am at a loss on the TT. Could that be titty? But how would you put them in a box? I am so confused.
