Check out my Distributor cap....

Recommended Posts

My Distributor cap to my new boat (new to me). Let's just say I maintain my stuff and the guy I bought my 04 23-lsv from does not. I suspect this is the original cap and rotor from 2004. WOW the rotor was corroded on and was not fun to pull off... I put brass parts on from std ignition. Thought I'd share...

I changed my original Aluminum(WTH?) cap & rotor this sprig at less then 300hrs and it looked close to that, I couldn't believe it with the low hours I have. The new cap and rotor I bought from Bakes Marine came with Brass parts like it should have in the first place, I guarantee it won't look like that over the same time frame.

Another option is the Accel brand cap and rotor. Part # 8132. Has brass inserts.

Don't you just love the marine environment.

That's really nasty, that's probably the original cap which had steel contacts.

We use the quicksilver brand in our shop and it holds up great, all brass components. With a marine brass cap you will pay a lot more but you won't have to service it as often.

Cap and rotor is one of the most overlooked maintenance items, so I wouldn't say the guy you bought your boat from didn't take care of his stuff.

Excellent point... I was a little more surprised to find what I found given the following... Both the interior and exterior of the boat was perfectly maintained and i have receipts showing the engine oil changed every season and when items broke he got them fixed - speedo, ballast pumps (the boat has 5 seasons on it - less than 200 total hours). However, what was overlooked was the trailer, and pretty much all other mechanical maintenance... V-drive oil, Tranny Fluid, tune ups, grease trailer bearings (think I lost a wheel bearing - have to jack up and see), grease rudder, steering adjustments, trailer brake system, impeller never changed, prop shaft seal (we will see next spring).

Anyway - great deal on the boat, plus this gives me something to tinker with this winter - which of course makes my wife happy cause i'm not bugging her... :)
