Pack Stuff on the Swim Platform?

I wondered if anyone put gear on their swim platform when towing their boat.

It seems like it would carry the weight of a few hundred pounds, but would it be the Beverly Hillbillies look?

Just curious....

I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't let my kids jump up and down on the platform and it would seem that towing with weight on it would subject it to the same type of forces. Placing weight that far back could also mess up the balance of the trailer

I pack coolers & firewood on the swim platform all the time. I doubt if I've packed a couple hundred lbs on it before, but I'm sure there was over 100 lbs.

Firewood? Uhm, doesn't it get, well you know...wet?

I put big coolers on the swim deck in the water for the trip out to the House boat and probably have had at least 600lbs of people jumping/dancing on it, heck I'm 240.

I would think 1-200lbs on the road would do no damage accept to your image and it might be considered "white trash" by some. Dontknow.gif

For the annual campout I strap two 5 gallon gas cans on my swim platform.

No gas dock, no drinking water, a gravel road and 13 miles to town.

I started using my recycle bins to carry firewood this year (like the ones from the garbage company). I pack the bins full of wood, kindling & newspaper & cover them with plastic & packing tape. Their heavy duty plastic & don't cost a thing. Two bins full of wood will usually last a couple of nights.

I put stuff (ice chest & EZ up canopy) on the swim step to go from the launch ramp to the boat-in campsite but I'm not sure I would want that weight bouncing on the platform going down the road.

I've strapped a big rubbermaid to the back and it worked great. It only had light gear in it but I needed every spare bit of storage space. Some may think it looks ghetto especially since i had three mountain bikes, beer cases, boards, etc etc piled up high.... I just think it looks like i have one hell of a fun weekend comin up!

We have probably put 3-500 lbs of weight back there when driving out to a houseboat or campsite. While trailering I try and keep weight off the platform. There is a big difference between putting weight back there when your in and out of the water. When you are in the water the boat will rock with the weight and bounce the nose etc not putting excessive force on the brackets. When you are out of the water the leverage is much greater since the boat cannot bounce with the weight (and the nose is strapped down making it a more effective lever)...just my .02.

My 2004 WS LSV had stress cracks in the gel where the platform bolts on. The platform was subjected to normal use only. The cracks were repaired, but they came back within a month. I would be very careful about putting any extra weight back there ...................especially while towing. Once bitten, twice shy.

Plus1.gif I've driven by boats like that in the middle of a work day, very envious.

But I wouldn't do it, ditto Liquidmx.

Mt. Bikes. I have a setup with 2 lockjaws that fits on my platform. Used to put bikes in the old boat, but not in the Bu. All in it is probably 100lbs with 2 bikes on it.

Hey he stole that idea from me. Red neck hillbilly low-life from detroit. in a wife beater. kid rock style

We fill up coolers with water and tie them on, regularly. It helps save the deck from being hit by the board too. But it's hard to do the deck start/stop then. Used trash cans for one summer. That really made the surf wake fun. who cares what people think as long as your having fun.

I tie my spare tire to the platform for road trips. Tied tight so it can't bounce.

I agree that its a little different to put weight on the swim platform while the boats in the water than when bouncing up and down at 70mph on the highway. Just a case of better safe than sorry though.
