Wiring harness

I gots a question.

I have a 4 plug harness coming out of my vehicle. My trailer has a 5 plug harness. When I want to back the trailer up, I have to unplug the harnes and plug the brown one from my vehicle into the 5th plug on the trailer harness so the brakes don't engage.

How do I rewire or workaround this? Do I have to rewire the vehicle and have that 5th wire go to the reverse lights? Or is there an easier way around this?

I had the same issue on my Sequoia.

I bougth a Flat-5 plug at the local auto parts store. Then I spliced into the wires for the vehicles 4 wire plug, and picked up the reverse light out of the tail light.

The original 4 plug connector is there, mounted in some sort of bracket, and my new 5 plug harness I just tuck up under the bumper when not in use. So now I guess I have both a 4 and a 5 plug harness. I could post some pictures if you're interested.

You don't need to rewire the vehicle. Took about 20 minutes to do, and that includes heat shrinking all my connections. Sure beats having to reconnect the plugs to back up.

I was thinking the same thing. I just have to find my reverse light wiring...ugh. I hate to go tearing into a brand new vehicle. Not to mention the questions that will start flying when the wife sees me out there with wires and wiring nuts and electrical tape etc...haha

Must be a Toyota thing. I have the Highlander...

Go to a site like etrailer, Reese or something similar - there might be a connector you can take apart and just insert a harness "plug" that has what you need.

I know they are available for many vehicles. There is a quick connect in the rear of the vehicle and these just plug between the male & female sides.

I did this on my Astro van several years ago, and did the same on an S-10 pickup.

It is really an easy project. It will sound especially easy if you call Toyota and get a quote on them installing the 7-pin 'receptacle'. I bought my boat soon after I bought my truck, and when I realized I needed that reverse light signal, I went back to the dealership. The Sequoias on the lot were about a 50/50 mix between the Flat 4 and the 'receptacle' looking thing. When I asked them about installing what I needed, they were talking several hundred dollars to do it.

I think I spend about $10.00 in parts.

My wiring harness is not a quick connect. The hitch was installed after factory by a 3rd party vendor through Toyota. I simply have the 4 plug harness hanging there.

Follow the 4 wire plug wires. There should be another connector further up the line. My suv did not come ready wired for a trailer. I had to have a wiring harness (4 pin in this case) from the manufacturer, that plugged into the main wiring harness (cannon type plug) that was under the rear quarter panel. It essentially tapped into the brake/turn/reverse lights.

Does Toyota sell a 5 five pin harness at all?

Not sure.

Looks pretty easy. Just need to splice into the reverse lights.

I think that is the way to go. Just have to find the reverse light wire.

That's what I did on my Pathfinder (I know it's not a Toyota, but same problem). The dealer installed the factory hitch with 4 pin connection & ran the wires up into the rear quarter panel & installed the plug inline there. I just added the tap into the reverse light. Only took about 90 mins, though most of that time was removing the interior panels to access the wiring to the tail lights.

I didn't have to remove the rear light pod. The other nice thing was that all the connections are safe & dry inside the body.

Edit - add dealer connection info.

The quick connect is on the vehicle, from the factory. might be inside the vehicle, in a rear panel.

Oh really? I'll have to check that out.

OK. There is a little panel in the back trunk area that comes off on the left side. In there I can easily see wires going to the rear tail lights, etc. I am trying to figure out where the 4 plug wiring harness is inside there as it appears that is just about the area where it goes at under the vehicle through the underside...hmmmm
