Disengage Transmission?

Recommended Posts

This may sound like a dumb question, but I can't seem to find how to disengage the transmission on my 2008 Response. My older boat you would pull out the knob where the throttle pivotted, but on this new boat it is smooth flat cap. Any help would be appreciated and I'm ready for snide comments, I'm sure I sure I deserve it.

Due to the shift by wire transmission in 2008 and the throttle lever recall you cannot disengage the transmission.

Yikes!

That seems like a safety issue or, mechanics nightmare.

What if you're working on a boat that has a higher than idle problem? You'd have to have the boat in water just to diagnose any type of runability problem higher than idle. Yeah, yeah, I know about the lots of dish washing soap trick too.

Will you expand on the "dish washing soap trick"?

As the owner of your boat you can remove the electrical connection on the electric shift solonoid, mounted on the side of the transmission. It has a red cap on the end. One plug controls forward, one controls reverse.

I don't recommend it, as it's too easy to forget to re-install (trust me, it's been forgotten until it was needed)

But, I have heard that if you squirt a whole boat-load of dishwashing soap onto the driveshaft just up hill of the cutlass bearing (which is inside the strut) that you could possibly run the driveshaft for a little while with the boat out of the water.
